SUBJECT: RINCONADA POOL OPENING CEREMONIES
This is an informational report and no Council action is required.
BACKGROUND
A major capital improvement project to address the need of Rinconada Pool has recently
been completed. Design work was accomplished in consultation with user groups and
community members. Construction began July 1, 1998. Delays occurred due to structural
problems found in both the competitive and children’s pools. The children’s pool needed to
be completely replaced.
The Rinconada Pool improvements include modifications to the piping infrastructure,
separate circulation systems for the competitive and children’s pools, a resurfaced pool deck,
upgrades to the mechanical/electrical system, locker room improvements, resurfaced
competitive pool, a new pool storage facility, modifications to quiet the public address
system loudspeakers, and installation of a new children’s pool.
The children’s pool is a newly constructed water play pool. This 90-foot circular pool
features five bays in a cloverleaf water pattern. Features include a "Zero-Depth" entry with
an ADA compliant access ramp, a three-foot deep instructional bay, Aqua-Duck riding toys
that squirt water, Lemon Drop Sprays, a Dew Drop Fountain, and a water slide for small
children. Parents will enjoy the new shade cabanas and grass area for resting and watching
their children.
DISCUSSION
The competitive pool opened February 15, 1999 for the Rinconada Masters Club, Palo Alto
Swim Club and the City’s Lap Swim program. Public Works and Recreation staff worked
weekend and holiday hours to have the competitive pool ready for the first swimmers. Some
work is still to be completed, including new locker room roofing, clothing shelves in locker
rooms, and installation of a grass area and shade cabanas. The children’s pool will open for
use Saturday, May 1, 1999.

awaited event.
A grand opening for the community is beirig planned for May 1999. Council will be invited
to participate in this ceremony as well. Several fun features are being planned for this event,
