RECOMMENDATIONS This is an informational report and requires no Council action. POLICY IMPLICATIONS Participating in Pollution Prevention Week continues the policy of promoting pollution prevention to protect the environment. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY For the last three years, City staff have participated in local and regional programs celebrating Pollution Prevention Week. Pollution PreventionWeek is now a national event, which local governments across the United States will recognize. Palo Alto City staff actively promote pollution prevention in our community throughout the year. Pollution Prevention Week provides an opportunity for staff to highlight the importance of the community’s pollution prevention efforts. FISCAL IMPACT Participating in Pollution Prevention Week has no f’lscal impact for the City. ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT City participation in Pollution Prevemion Week does not constitute a project under the California Environmental Quality Act and, therefore, an environmental assessment has not been performed. ROBERTS Director of Public Works CITY MANAGER APPROVAL: EMILY HARRISON Assistant City Manager CITY OF PALO ALTO PROCLAMATION POLLUTION PREVENTION WEEK WHEREAS, WHEREAS, WHEREAS, the City of Palo Alto supports a clean and safe environment for its residents; and pollution prevention is an approach to environmental protection that focuses on waste prevention and is, therefore, a desirable Strategy for protecting our environment; and pollution prevention can increase industrial efficiency and save businesses money," and WHEREAS,pollution prevention offers both environmental protection and increased economic competitiveness," and WHEREAS,by focusing attention on pollution prevention, the City of Palo Alto is protecting its water, air, and soil and increasing the safety of its citizens," and WHEREAS,"POLLUTION PREVENTION WEEK" .is an opportunity for government, industry, and environmental organizations to recognize the potential of pollution prevention, to celebrate past successes of pollfttion prevention in our community, and to work together to plan for a prosperous and sustainable future. NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOSEPH H. HUBER, Mayor of’the City of Palb Alto, on behalf of the City Council, do hereby proclaim September 15-21, 1997, as "POLLUTION PREVENTION WEEK" and urge all citizens and businesses to participate in activities that prevent pollution in our community.
