POLICY IMPLICATIONS The information in this report has no policy implications. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The Community Services Department’s Division of Recreation, Open Space and Sciences received three awards of Excellence and two Honorable Mentions from the Califomia Park and Recreation Society (CPRS) in this year’s statewide competition. The awards were presented to the City on March 15 at the 49th Annual Califiomia and’Pacific Southwest Recreation and Park Conference in Sacramento. Awards of Excellence included: ¯An award to the Special Events Office for its use and application of the logo for the May F&e Parade themed "Animals, Animals, Animals." The logo was developed with children in mind; the object was to create whimsical, cartoon-like characters that youngsters could identify with. °Recognizing the importance of residents meeting and knowing each other, Mayor Lanie Wheeler officially declared August to be "Block Party Month." The colorful and informative Block Party Starter Kits were created to get people excited about hosting block parties in their neighborhoods. These kits received an Award of Excellence. °Palo Alto teens kicked offthe school year with a "Back to School Street Party" that attracted an estimated 4,000 participants. The Street Party provided a mix of activities including live music, a disc jockey, roller blade demonstrations, video games, basketball, food, and a night of wholesome fun. CMR: 196:97 Page 1 of 2 Honorable Mentions were awarded a~ the Conference to "Snowmen and Sleigh Rides" and the poster designed to promote the Street Party. FISCAL IMPACT No fiscal impact.
