This report requests no action at this time and therefore has no policy implications.
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The City of Palo Alto Water Utility recently received two awards, the Award of Excellence and
the President’s Gold Performance Award, from the American Water Works Association for its
excellent record of employee and motor vehicle safety. The Award of Excellence is a distinct
honor bestowed upon water utilities that have worked a calendar year with injury and accident
rates at 50 percent below national averages. Only 68 out of 1,766 AWWA utility member
applicants in the United States and Canada received this special award. The President’s Gold
Performance Award is given to utilities which have had a 50 percent reduction in accident rates
from the previous calendar year. Palo Alto was one of the .300 utilities that were given this
award. Both awards were issued in. January 1997 for the reporting year ending December 1995.

No recommendations are contained in this report and there is no fiscal impact.
