EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
The patch, which was designed by retired Fire CaptainJim Timko, was selected by Fire
Chief Grijalva to become part of the Fire Department uniform because it better represents the
local flavor of Palo Alto and the services provided by the Palo Alto Fire Department. All
Fire Department uniforms will begin being outfitted with the new uniform patch during the
month of January.
The Palo Alto Fire Department is honored to be represented by NASA Astronaut and
Mission Commander Michael A. Baker (Captain, USN) who will carry the new patch into

space during the next space shuttle mission (STS-81) scheduled tbr January 12, 1997 launch
from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
Captain Baker elected to represent the Palo Alto Fire Department at the request of his sister-
in-law, Karen Mudurian, who is employed locally and has an interest in the fire service.
Captain Baker’s mother-in-law also resides locally.
STS-81 will be the fifth Shuttle-Mir docking mission and will begin when the Space Shuttle
Atlantis lifts offfrom Launch Pad 39B at Kennedy Space Center (KSC). Atlantis will then
maneuver to rendezvous and dock with Mir on Flight Day 3 of the mission.
Once docked, STS-81 Mission Specialist Jerry Linenger will take his place aboard the
Russian space station as a member of the Mir Crew for a planned stay of approximately four
months. He will replace NASA astronaut John Blaha, who has been on Mir since September
19, 1996, when Atlantis docked with Mir duringthe STS-79 mission. Linenger will remain
aboard Mir until he is replaced by STS-84 Mission Specialist Michael Foale. He will retum
to Earth during that mission, which is currently targeted for May, 1997.
Atlantis’ primary payload will be a SPACEHAB double module that will serve as a transport
module for nearly 2,000 pounds of food, water and other supplies for the Mir crew. During ’
the five days of docking operations, the STS81 and Mir 22 crews will work together to
transfer supplies into Mir and conduct experiments in the SPACEHAB and the Russian space
station. Astronaut Blaha will return to Earth as a member of the STS-81 crews when Atlantis
touches down at KSC to conclude the ten day mission.
