No Council action is required. The Fire Department has redesigned the shoulder patch worn on all Fire Department uniforms. The new patch is less generic than the previous patch and will incorporate a more local flavor. The patch background represents the geography of Palo Alto from the foothills to the bay. A representation of E1 Palo Alto is depicted in the center between representations of City Hall and Hoover Tower to honor the longstanding relationship between Palo Alto and Stanford.° The traditional fire service logo identifying the types of services provided by the Fire Department and the establishment date oflthe Palo Alto Fire Department are also incorporated in the design. RECOMMENDATIONS This informational staff report does not include any recommendations for Council action. POLICY IMPLICATIONS The content of this report is consistent with eXistingCity policies. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The patch, which was designed by retired Fire CaptainJim Timko, was selected by Fire Chief Grijalva to become part of the Fire Department uniform because it better represents the local flavor of Palo Alto and the services provided by the Palo Alto Fire Department. All Fire Department uniforms will begin being outfitted with the new uniform patch during the month of January. The Palo Alto Fire Department is honored to be represented by NASA Astronaut and Mission Commander Michael A. Baker (Captain, USN) who will carry the new patch into CMR 110:97 Page 1 of 2 space during the next space shuttle mission (STS-81) scheduled tbr January 12, 1997 launch from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Captain Baker elected to represent the Palo Alto Fire Department at the request of his sister- in-law, Karen Mudurian, who is employed locally and has an interest in the fire service. Captain Baker’s mother-in-law also resides locally. STS-81 will be the fifth Shuttle-Mir docking mission and will begin when the Space Shuttle Atlantis lifts offfrom Launch Pad 39B at Kennedy Space Center (KSC). Atlantis will then maneuver to rendezvous and dock with Mir on Flight Day 3 of the mission. Once docked, STS-81 Mission Specialist Jerry Linenger will take his place aboard the Russian space station as a member of the Mir Crew for a planned stay of approximately four months. He will replace NASA astronaut John Blaha, who has been on Mir since September 19, 1996, when Atlantis docked with Mir duringthe STS-79 mission. Linenger will remain aboard Mir until he is replaced by STS-84 Mission Specialist Michael Foale. He will retum to Earth during that mission, which is currently targeted for May, 1997. Atlantis’ primary payload will be a SPACEHAB double module that will serve as a transport module for nearly 2,000 pounds of food, water and other supplies for the Mir crew. During ’ the five days of docking operations, the STS81 and Mir 22 crews will work together to transfer supplies into Mir and conduct experiments in the SPACEHAB and the Russian space station. Astronaut Blaha will return to Earth as a member of the STS-81 crews when Atlantis touches down at KSC to conclude the ten day mission. FISCAL IMPACT There is no direct fiscal impact to the City. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT There is no Environmental Assessment required for this report.
