SUBJECT: APPROVAL OF APPOINTMENT, DIRECTOR OF PLANNING AND
. COMMUNITY ENVIRONMENT
I am pleased to recommend for your approval the appointment of Ed Gawf as Director of
Planning and Community Environment. Ed comes from the City of San Jose, where he is
.currently Deputy Director of Planning, Building and Code Enforcement, and is responsible
for managing the operations of a 95-member code enforcement operation. He has been with
the City of San Jose for seven years. As Deputy Director, one of Gawf’s major
accomplishments was to revitalize the Code Enforcement function to be more effective in
achieving community goals and more responsive to citizen concerns. In addition, Ed was
involved in managing a variety of planning functions within the City of San Jose.
Gawfworked previously in Boulder, Colorado where .he was the Director of Planning. His
work included revising Boulder’s comprehensive plan, rewriting the zoning code, and
developing design guidelines for the downtown and historic residential neighborhoods.
Gawf will head the City’s Planning and Community Environment Department, which
includes 50 employees.
Ed was selected from a final group of four candidates which resulted from a regional search
initiated in May.
