HomeMy WebLinkAbout1998-05-04 City Council (16)City of Palo Alto City Manager’s Report TO:HONORABLE CITY COUNCIL FROM:CITY MANAGER DEPARTMENT: COMMUNITY SERVICES DATE:MAY 4, 1998 CMR: 223:98 SUBJECT:1997 STATEWIDE CALIFORNIA PARK AND RECREATION SOCIETY AWARDS RECEIVED BY THE COMMUNITY SERVICES DEPARTMENT, DIVISION OF RECREATION, OPEN SPACE AND SCIENCES BACKGROUND This is an informational reporting, informing Council of awards received by the Recreation, Open Space and Sciences Division in March 1998._ DISCUSSION In a statewide competition, the Community Services Department’s Division of Recreation, Open Space and Sciences received four awards of Excellence from the California Park and Recreation Society. Palo Alto received the most awards of any city in the State. The awards were presented on March 4 to the City at the 50th Annual California and Pacific Southwest Recreation and Park Conference in Long Beach. Awards of Excellence included: * The "Fun Department Guide" was honored as the Best Single Brochure in California for cities with a population of 50- 100,000. Featuring charming illustrations, clever text, and a variety of children’s games and activities, the City of Palo Alto created this brochure to promote the services available through the Division of Recreation, Open Space and Sciences. The brochure was further recognized and received the coveted "Special Award of Excellence" for exceeding all awards criteria. ¯The May Fete Children’s Parade received the outstanding Logo Award in California. This whimsical logo was designed to depict the 1997 May Fete Parade theme, "Masks In Motion." The masked figures in the logo were turned into giant, colorful masks that provided the major visual focus of the parade. CMR:223:98 Page 1 of 2 ¯The Omega Club, for high functioning adults with special needs, was recognized as the outstanding Therapeutic Program in California. The program provides real-life activities, which challenge, motivates and helps the members learn to cope with everyday situations. Prepared By: Daniel B.
