were read. The minutes referring to the appointment of W: 1".

"W. H. :Kelly's appointment by the Mayor was approved by the
Counc it " At the . bottom of page 338, the expression "tax
rates"yas changed; to read "gas rates". As thus amended the
minutes were approved.
Petition Hof_ Mrs. Detrick.
The petition of Mrs. Jessica S. Detrick for a
refund of taxes paid:' last year in ignorance of the fact that she
was entitled to ;1000 exemption was read. This by motion of
Thous and. Cooley was referred to the City Attorney for a report.

A letter from Paul Shoup, Vice President of the
Southerp,,Pacific Company, under date of January 25, 1925, was
read. ►r. Chapin, Manager of the Peninsular Railway Company,
addressed the Council, stating that he had asked the Railroad
Commission :"a few days previously to put back . on the calendar
the request. for abandonment of its franchise in Palo Alto which
had • previously beenmade and which by act ion of the railroad
company had been temporarily withdrawn. He stated that the
'Railroad Commission said this would be done and that Palo Alto
would be infbrzed:..

On motion of Bertsohe and Cooley it was unanimously
directed that $181 be appropriated for the removal of a tree
on. Alma Street, said :amount.. to be transferred from the .un-
appropriated balance of. the :general fund.::..
Concerning the reeomuienda tion of the S. G. W.
relating to: -the Palo Alto tree`. it .was directed that the.
necessary grading and planting be done and. paid. for from the
Street Departmentbudget and that the cost of the construction
of walks be included in the 1925-1926 budget.
On motion of Cathcart and Cooley the request of
the Red Cross, Palo Alto Chspter, for reimbursement of funds
expended : for lodgings for strangers was referred back to
Committees No. 4.

Railroad Commission asking for an interpretation of the
decision concerning rates charged the City -of Palo Alto by the
Pacific Gas and Electric Company.'

The:matter of anordinance prohibiting bicycle
racks and similar obstructions on sidewalks where electroliers
are installed was referred to Committee No. 2 and the City
Attorney.
The matter of taking X100 out of the police
incidental fund and placing said amount in the hands of the
Chief -of Police as -a revolving fund, the Auditor each month
to 'put in the revolving fund the amount called for by vouchers
