The Council of the City o± Palo Alto met in regular
session on this date at 8 P. M.,' with Mayor Hobart presiding.
Roll call as follows:
Present: Bertsche, Bonn, Cooley, Duveneci:, Easterday,
Hobart, Jordan, :Kelly, Lausten, •Thoits, Thomas,
Wood.
Absent: Cathcart, Cottrell, ring.
The minutes of the meeting of July 12, 1926 were
read and approved.
Ee9ring on Changing Agricultural istrict
It was announced that this was the time set for the
hearing on the recommendation of the city Planning Commission
to change the agricultural district to First Residential District.
The Clerk stated that a: notice of the hearing had been
published three times within the week as required by law.
The Council was addressed on this matter by Mr. F. B. Duveneck,
Mr. C. H. Williams and others.
The ordinance providing for change of the Agricultural
District to First Residential District was given first reading
and referred to Committee No. 1.
Petition a -ai.nst Electric Sign_ Ordinance
A petition was received, signed by 61 merchants,
protesting against any proposed legislation to restrict the use
or display of electric sign . Mr. C. H. Dickson of the motel
Ramona and Mx. R. M. Salcedo, representing Beran's Shoe Store,
addressed the Council on this matter. A letter.was received

After some discussion on the matter, the petition and
communication were referred to Committee No. 1.
Petition forDiPgonal ?nrk ing
A petition was received, with 292 signatures,
submitting to the Council a proposed ordinance requiring
diagonal parking on University Avenue between the Circle and
Cowper Street, petitioning that this ordinance be adopted by
the Council without alteration, or that the City Council submit
the same to a vote of the people at a special election.
This petition was referred to the City Clerk to verify tee
signatures and report back to the Concii at the next meeting.

Two letters,dated July 31 st and August 5th, were
received from F. V. "ebster, Dice President anaGeneral :ana:er
of the Peninsular Railway Company, concerning bus service,
stating ";hat the Peninsuiar Railway Company will continue to
furnish service for at least ninety days after the experimental
period terminating September 28, 1926. On motion of -�e11y
and Hasterday, the proposition was accepted, with'tne under-
standing that either party can give ninety days notice of
intention to discontinue service ana the City attorney was
instructed to so inform the Peninsular Railway Company.

Letter from Mean .:: er
A letter was read from Fred E. Ingram, Manager of the
Palo Alto Band, requesting an appropriation of w350.00, or
$50.00 for each concert to be given dur l.n.g the months of August
and September, seven concerts in all. Yr. Jordan, Chairman of
Committee No. 4, stated that the committee felt that there was not
the call for a band_ in Palo Alto as in other places, that this
was not a question to be settled by the committee but should come
before the Council, and that this amount bad not been included in
the midget. The letter was placed on :Fide.

A letter was .received from ?ndr; v 4 -err, tendering his
resignation as a member of the Board of Safety, tnis being
necessitated by his changing his residence to the- East. 0n
motion of Thoits and Mrs. Duveneck, the resignation was accepted,
and the Clerk was directed to address a communication to Mr. .err
expressing regret at his resi>tination and the tnenf.;, of the
Council for his services on tee Board of Safety.

A request was received from the City Clerk for a
leave of absence until August 31st. On Notion of belly and

submitting estimates of cost for installing police lights in
certain alleys, installing fences along San Francisauito Creek
and red reflectors on certain trees in streets, ae follows:

A report was read from Committee No. 1, stating that
action is deferred on the ordinance amending, one p1 u. ing law,
and that to action has been taken as yet on the ordinance on
signs and billboards. The committee also reported tn_at they.
had requested the Attorney to prepare a new ordinance on the
moving of old buildings, which would be presented at this meeting.
Committee .Lo. 1 also informed the Council that a nearing would be
held on widening the roadbed of .digh Street on Aug=ust 30, 1S26,
at 7:30 P. M

Report of Committee No. 5
A report was received from Committee No. 5. The
first item of the report recommended that t^e account of Leonard
S. Reading amounting to Q294.4O for services rendered it re
appeal against taxation of incomes of e°nployees of public
utilities be allowed in full. On motion of Bertsche and Cooley,
this claim was allowed, the necessary amount to be taken . Jen from

The City Attorney presented the findings and award
in the case of Carl 5.odestrom,• who was injured vh i..e in the employ
of the city as a cement laborer. On motion of Thoits and Bonn,
the 4ttorney was directed to file the necessary application for
a re -hearing of this case with the Industrial Accident Commission.

Mr. Jordan, Chairman of Committee No. 4, read. a letter
from Councilman Kelly concerning the increase in the proposkd
budget for 1926-1927, and asking if it ml gr_t be possible to
eliminate certain items in the budget and reduce the tax rate.
On motion of Wood- and. Lazisten, it was directed that
wneci the Council adjourn, it adjourn to meet on Thursday,
August X1,,2.1926, at 8 P. it;. in the City Hall for consideration of
the budget.
