The Council of the City of Palo Alto met in regular
session on this date at. 8 P - M.: with a� ayor Hobart presiding'.
Po11 call as follow's:
Present: Be.rts,che, Senn, Cathcart, Cottrell, Duveneck,
Easterday, Hobart, Jordan, Kelly, Lausten, Thoits,
Thomas, ,Ding, Wood.
Absent: Cooley.
On motion of Thoits and Wing, the Council adjourned
'„" the :'ire Department club rood, because of the Council Room

On• motion of 3ertsehe and Lausten, the minutes of
"pri l 1.1, April 30 and May 2, 1927, were approved.
Hearing on Setback Change
It was announced that t? ::. .'arc s the time for a hearing
on the recommendation of the.: City Planninw Commission to change
the setback line on the property of Fred Murise t at the corner
of "'alp Alto Avenue and Emerson Street in Block 1. :;o protests
were received.
Ordinance No. 383, changing the setback line on said
er0perty, was read, and on motion of Thoits and Wing was adopted
by unanimous vote on roll call.
Petition from Mayfield Property. Owners
} petition was receivedfrom property owners of the
Y.ayfiQld section, protesting against the widening of streets in
7a;yfiel; under tn:e Mattoon Act. On motion of Jor
dan ar. and c.
Cathcart, the petition was received and placed on file, and the
City Clerk was instructed to send a copy of the report of the
City Attorney on the Mattoon Act to the signers4of this petition.;:
Petition Against Plan for Park
A petition was received from property owners in
so:th Palo Alto protesting against the acquisition of e public
square near the Mayfield Station .for park purposes, under the
assessment district plan.
A report was read from the Board of Works with
referenceto the acquisition of land near the Mayfield Station
and of Blocs: I, South Palo Alto, ' for park purposes, suggesting
that a possible method of acquiring this land would be for the
interested property owners to aoqui.re the land by deed, and then
Lease to the city for a term of years with option to purchase
at the price they paid for the. land.
On motion of Cathcart : and Easterday, the matter of
the accisition of these two: pieces of property for park purposes
was referred to Committee No. 4.
Letter from Peninsular Railway Co.
A letterfrom the :Superintendent and Manager of the
Peninsular Railway Company expressing their appreciation to the
Council for the adoption of the ordinance on bus stops was
received and placed on file,.,

Letter frozrz. Mrs. Sheridan
A letter was received from Rath Knox Sheridan
protestingagainst the closing of a portion of Hopkins Avenue.
This, .matter was discussed and previous motions of the Council
on —this .?.ratter were considered. The plan of Panconada Park
adopted. in April, . 1024, showing that this street was already
closed,, was examined. On motion of Easterdayr and Ben sche
letter was referred to the City Planning Commission, with the

Letter from "Tax • Collector
�+ rrrryOm A Letter was received from the Tax Collector
y� i ec ending tti,1at taxers on two pieces of property in tie Mayfield
District be paid by the city to clear the same on the city tax
roll, as this property is operative property of the Southern
Pacific Company and should not have been assessed. This, was
referred to Co.2imi ttee No. 4 and the City Attorney

A letter from the City Assessor recommending certain
tax refunds was referred to Committee No. 5 and the City Attorr:ey.

Resolution No. 540, awarding said con tract as
recommended, was read, acid on motion of Kelly and Jordan, was
passed by unanimous vote on roll call.

Resolution No. 541, providing for the sale Of
Municipal lrnprovement..Bonds of 1927, was read, and on motto n of
Berts,che and Lausten, was adopted by unanimous vote on roil call.
Said resolution. fixes June 13, 1927, at 8 P. M. as the time for
receiving bids for: -the. the. purchase of said bonds
Reportef Codification Committee
A: report was received from the special committee on
the iCOdificatiOn of the city ordinances, recommending the
adoption of Codified. Ordnance No. 3, as presented in the printed
proofs oi'. the, . sane..: An ordinance enacting, revising, amending

and codifying •the' ordinances of the City of ' Palo Alto, to be
known as; Codified Ordinance No. 3, waspresented for first
reading.

Report of City.'Atty on Mattoon Act
A report was received from the City Attorney
concerning the proced:re o,f acquiring land under the Mattoon
Act for opening or widening streets.. I'he City Attorney also
addressed the Council on this matter.-

On motion . of Cottrell and Jordan, it was directed
that an informal hearing be held on May 16, 1927, at 8 P. M.
on the proposed widening of, Lytton Avenue, and the City Clerk
ias requested to senda-notice of this hearing to property

Adjournment to May 11,, 1927
On : o vion 'of Wing and Wood, the Council adjourned
temporarily, to .the call of -."the Chair.
A short tii:e later, the Council assembled at the call
of the Mayor, and on motion of Cottrell and Beta tschea the
Council adjourned to Wednesday, May 11, 1927, at 7:30 P. M,
for the purpose Of canvassing the returns of, the election
held on this day, May 9, 1927, for, the election of councilmen..
