The Council of the City of Palo Alto met in special
session on this date at 7:3O P. M., pursuant to the following
cal' 1'
"As Mayor of. the City of Palo Alto, l hereby call
a special meeting of the Council of the City of
•Palo Alto, to convene at the. council ' c1 amber in the
,City Hall of Palo Alto, at the hour.:ofe7:30 P.M.,
•Thursday October 31, 1929, for the purpose of
considering the cost of natural gas."
xr':ayor Christensen presided, and roll call Was as
follows:
.Present;: • Miss Baugh, Berts che,Christensen, Johnson,
Lausten, Thoits, Mrs. Margaret Thomas, Reynolds.
Absent:
Gas Rate Case
Cathcart, Hobart, Kelly, Mosher, Thomas, ; hisier,
wood.
The Mayor read the call for this special meeting,
f- and also read a statement explaining, the purpose of the meeting,
which yeas to cor:sider:. matters in connection with the gas rate
case now:...pending before the Railroad Commission, a preliminary
hearing on. which - IS to be held on November 13th
Councilman: Wood arrived at this time and was present
during the ..nest of the meeting. iir. Reynolds was then excused
to attend another meeting.
A report was received from the Board of Public corks
recommend ing_that the City Council appropriate a sum not
exe ec ing p5JO.3O for, payment of expert services of a .gss
vaivation. en ineer, in connection with the preliminary hearing
before the Railroad Commission on the .app ication to fix
the wholesale price of natural gas furnished by the Pacific Gs
and .Electric . Company to Palo Alto.
The City attorney then read a detailed report helve:.
prepared relating to the present status of the natural gas rate
case' now before the ?railroad Commission arid:: the application of
the City oaf Palo Alto for a reduction in the wholesale rate for
gas. The Attorney explained the importance of employing ?n
expert to assist him and the engineers of the City in the
Presentation. of this case. He stated that in his opinion the
City of Palo Alto should not bear this expense alone, that the
facts should be presented to other towns and communities
interested in this ease, and their cooperation end assistance
revestec.. . letter was read ac;.dressed to the: City Attorney
from Yr.' Edwin n S. Bryant, Asst. Manager of .the Natural Gas Sept.
of the: City of Deng Beach, offering his services for 25.00 " r
day plus: traveling ` expenses. A telegram was received from
Burns -McDonnell -Smith Engineering Company, offering their
services as., gas valuation engineers. Prof. L. B. Reynolds of
the Board of Works addressed the Council and explained the neec
for exnert.'assistance in this :natter.
The; City. Attorney stated that it was his, opinion

On motion Of Tro,its and Bertsche, an appropriation
of 500.00 was made from the unappropriated balance of the

On motion:.of Wood and. Mrs. . Thomas, a co;..rtittee was
appointed co;posed of the Mayor, a member of the Council, a
member of the -Board of Works, the City Engineer and the City
. ttorney, to take `-up this matter with San Jose and other
peninsula cities,: in an e fort to obtain their cooperation and
asssistance in this case.
