letter 'wss. read from Dr. J. - G w Sharp recommending an overhead
foot .path, instead' of a subway for this purpose.. A letter was
also `read from Dr. C. G' Baldwin expressing belief 'that there
should be an overhead pathway rather than a subway.. :Dr, Baldwin
also presentee. 'a` book with a sketch for an over -head bridge,
which book included expressions from different residents of
Palo Alto that the -overhead oath was preferable to a. 'subway for
ti is:. purpose. yr. Baldwin `requested that these letters"a.nd

sketch and let ers was' passed around Council table and Examine
by d; fferent ,members of Council. A report vas received fro:: the
Board of Works on this matter, stating that it had on this same
d.ay,;opened bids for the cora'truction of the pedestrian subway.
under E1 Camino Real opposite Mayfield School. It 'reported to
Council that: two bids had been- received, one from henry '. Post
and one from The Thermotite Construction Company. The Board
recommended that the lowest bidder be awarded the contract. as
his b .d made to the 'Boars of Public ,orks, and that as .the
bid was a littleMore than $300.00 in excess of the, budget
appropriation Council approved the additional su t needea:,. '^re

necessary appropriating be made from the Contingent .:Fund... -On
recommendation :o,f the,'City Attorney Council directed .that, the
,Board Of Works ,enter into contract with the Thermotite con-
structiron Ccmpany to have:this subway constructed in accord-
ance with their accepted bid.
Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Invitation was extended to Council and members
of their .,fa:;iil es to attend the public ceremony of the Veterans
of Foreign ':'tars to be held on October 10th, 1929.
Report of City Planning Commission.
'A report of the City Planning Commission was
read, which recc, Mmer_ded that Council delay action until Cc :.ob--r
14th on the ordinance before Council recommended by Committee
No. 1 to .abolish the 70% building width restriction in Third
Residential Zone. An extended discussion followed in which
Prof. Clam,:, Chairman of the .Planning Commission, the Building
Inspector, ; anti different members of the City Council took part.
After this -discussion by a vote of 9 ayes and 5 noes this pro-
posed ordinance was referred to the City- Planning Commission
for study and recommendation.

Committee No. I recommended to Council,: re-
fer.ring to petition .signed. by 5. E. Moore a.ndothers, that In
the Third, Resider:tial •lone, building be nermitted upon 55% of the
area: of inside lots -and 70% '.on corner lots. Council referred
this ;recommendation; to -Planning Commission. Committee No. 1
reco ended that the 2& foot..lot c istri..ct in Mayfield be re-
zoned to '2hd2,1'esidentiall upon the initiative of City Council.

$15,000, on account be transferred from the Plaza Fund to the
Municipal Paving - Fur d to be used .in pav; n g University avenue
Plaza. Council..: ;by 'unanimous vote on rollcall directed this be
done, money to be taken from the Contingent Fund. On recommend-
ation of the .Office Manager Committee No. 4 recommended that
$150 be appropriated "frog: unexpended balance in General Fund for
extra clerical help for City Clerk. This was approved by Council
