'he Council of the City of Palo Alto met on this date
at 8 p. m. .pursuant to adjournment of July 22, 1929, with Mayor
Christensenpresiding. Poll call as follows:

It' was.: announced that this was the time set- for a
hearing.on.Resolutio.n ..of. Intention No. 769 for the improvement of
University Avenue between Alma. Street and El Camino Real.
A written protest was received from the Southern
Pacific Company. Mr. Lathrop, assistant division engineer of the
Southern Pacific., was ,present and addressed the:. Council on this
matter, referringparticularly to Sec. VII, of the protest
concerning „an alternative plan for improving Univ.ersi ty Avenue
nor 'under consideration between the City and the Bauthern Pacific
Co." - The City Attorney suggested that resolutions overruling.
the pro:te.s nd. ordering the work be passed, and that. the time for
receiving bids couldbe postponed until negotiations are made with
the ,'Southerp Pici_fic Co
Resolution No. 782 overruling protest of the Southern
Pacific Company _was: read, and on motion of Hobart,. and Lausten,
was adopted by unanimous vote on roll call.
No' other pro tests - were received and the< hearing was
closed. Resolution .No. .783, ordering work for improvement of
J.niversity Avenue between Alma Street and El Camino -Real, was read,
and ` on.; mo tion . o'f Bertsche and Thomas, was passed by unanimous vote
on roil call. '.phis resolution fixes august 26, l92i, at 8 p. ....
as the 'time" for . receiving bids on this work.
The matter was then referred to the, Board of Works and
Councilman .Hobart, to negotiate with the Southern. Pacific Company
on .:this; :matt:er, these 'negotiations to be completed .before August
26th, the date set for receiving bids on the work.

This was also the time set for a hearing on Resolution
of Intention No..: 776 for the improvement of portions of Hamilton
.Avenue,.:F'ertando Avenue, Alma Street, Emerson Street, Ramona Street,
Rinconada: Avenue, Santa Rita Avenue and Y ashington Avenue. No
written protests were . received. A verbal protest was made by
Mi. :_Q,iint®.. Paucera,: property owner on Ramona Street between
California and` Washington Avenues, against the paving of Ramona
Street inthat block.. He was informed by the City Attorney that
his: protest was not legal since it was not in writing.
Resolution No. 784, ordering the work for the
improvement .of sai.d.' streets, was read, and on motion of Thoits and
Johnson, was passed.by unanimous vote on roll call. This resolution
fixes August 12, 1929, at 8 p. m., as the time for receiving bids.

The Mayor announced that this wasthe time fixed for
a bearing on the matter of rezoning those portions of Blocks 24 and
26 now in the firstresidential zone to second residential. A

and addressed the Council, on.this matter. Those who protested
against the change of zone were: Mrs. Minnie E. Blythe, Mrs.
Orville Valentine, Mrs. Ella; Adams. and,. Mr. Hugo

Widening Cambridge Ave.
A report was . received from the joint committee composed of the Board of Public Works, City Planning Co fission
and : Committee No., 1, recommending, that the City Attorney ;be
advised to ask the SuperiorCourt. for a continuation under.
stipulation, .in the ::matter :of widening Cambridge Avenues '�
the procedure for the-highway..widening is started, so a. -to settle
all damages and assessments ` at 'the same time. On motion of
Mosher and Bertsche;,, this recommendation was approved.

Ordinance; Amending Sec. 101ia
A report was also received from the City Planning
Commission recommending the adoption of a proposed ordinance
amending:. Section 101.1a of Codified Ordinance o 3. Ordinance
No. 472, amending. Section 103.1a, was read, and on : motion of
Mosher and, Lausten,. was adopted unanimously on roll call.
Lease for Boat shop
A report was received from Committee No. 1
recommending that M. A. P. Anderson be given the first year's
lease on a site on -bay shore property for a boat shop at a rental
of 4,60;00, the terms for the remainder of the lease to be made
by the Board of Works. On motion of Thoits and- Mosher, the
Board of Works was . authorized. to negotiate with Mr. Anderson
on the proposedlease, in accordance with this recommendation,
and report back . to the Council.
Easements', on California Ave.
A report was received from Committee No. 1
recommending that the Council approve the recommendation of the
Planning' ;Commission to acquire an easement of 15 feet on each
side:: of --Ca,1 `fornia Avenue from El Camino Real to Alma Street,
for: the purpose of widening California Avenue. • On motion of
Thoits and` Hobart, this .matt-er was referred to the City Attorney
for study' and report.
Eznnloyment of Archi tect
Resolution No. 786, concerning the .eiiployment of
Reed and Cor.-1e,tt :as architects for the new hospital, was read,
and, on motion of Mosher and Lausten, was passed by unanimous vote
'on roll: call:

A retort' was received from the Board of V+orks
approving, the transfer from the Pacific Gas and Electric= Company
covert rig . theeonveyince< of gas mains on Middlefield Road and on
Embax^cadero: Road. On motion of Lausten and Thoits, resolutions
accepting the conveyance of said gas rains were adopted by
unanimous vote on roll call.

An, ordinance on the issuance of bonds for the .new
