June 10, 1929 The Council of the City of Palo Alto met onthis date at 7:30 :p;. m;., in 'accordance with motion passed on June 4, 1929, for the purpose of holding a conference with the City Planning Cox`mmisston, at .the . recuest of the Commission, on the matter of res:cindtng.setback lines. The members of theCityCouncil present were Bertsche, Cathcart, Christensen, Hobart, Hoge, Johnson, f Jordan, Kelly, Thoits, "Thomas, . and Whisler. Of the City Planning Commission, there were present Clark, Goodenough, Malcolm, Hoge, Nutting, B xbee. and Mrs. Thomas At the request of the Mayor, Prof. Clark,, chairman of the Planning Commission:, took the chair. Prof. Clark addressed the joint meeting ng on. the various problems before the Planning Commission and its policies in regard to changes of zones, change of setback lines and street widening, with .particular reference to the :natter of maintlatning the 7 -foot setback line.on streets where it has been established for the purpose. of` future widening of the street. A map was presented showing locations where the setback line has been maintained at placed; where buildings have been erected after the setback line was established, and the importance of adhering to / thispolicy to insure the widening of business streets in the future avas emphasized : by Prof. Clark. Dr.J. G. Sharp also made a statement an the importance of street widening in the business district. The .joint meeting was then adjourned at 8:10 p. m. City Hall, Palo Alto,: California. Court Addition This was also, the time for a hearing on the: matter of establishing setback linesfor the South Court Addition.. No protests -were received and there was no one present who wished to speak on the matter. Ordinance No. 464, establishing setback lines :in . the South Court . Addition: was read, and on motion of Christensen and whis.Ier, wra3 passed by unanimous vote on roll call. Channe of Setback-.: Line A hearing was also held on the recommendation City Planning Commission to change the setback linedonitheof the property of S. F. Sehomberg on Kingsley Avenue in Block 94. There were no protests received. Ordinance No. 465, changing the setback line on this;. property, was read, and on :notion of Whis1er and Bertsche, was adopted byunanimous vote on roll call. Concerning P.G. and E. PowerLines The matter of -the, right of the Pacific Gas And Electric Company :to rebuild its power transmission lines on curtain streets in the city . of Palo Alto was brought up. Mr. John D. duster, division manager- of . the =Pacific . Gas and Electric Company, and Mr. Straub, =attorney, were present. Mr. Stranb,;addressed the Council statingthat it was his ;opinion :that the lines of the company were establishedin. Palo:. Alto.. years, ago under a constitutional .franchise Mr. Avery � ry Howe, attorney for Hare, Brewer and Clark, who had objected to the rebuilding of the power lines on Hamilton: Avenue, addressed- the•Council on - thus matter, stating that he believed the Pacific ,Gas ,andi Electric `'Co does not have the right to use the ,city streets for their power lines. The City Attorney presented a letter fron"the'Southern Pacific Company: relative to the closing of a portion of Clive Street Whicn had been requested by the Southern PacificCompany, and, the re,quest-of.the Council that a deed of. dedication, be given by the Southern Padeic Company for the widening of Califorriia Avenue in:exchange for the land made by the closing of Olive St, it being the opinion of the Southern Pacific Co. that these two matters be handled separately.
