The Council of the City', of Palo Alto met on this > date at 7:.30 p. m., pursuant to adjournment_ 011 February 10, 1930. In the absence of the ?tayor, the ,meeting . was called to order by the City Clerk who asked' for nomination s 'for Mayor= pro tem. On motion of Cathcart and Wood, Councilman:. Hobart was appointed Mayor pro tem and took the chair; Roll: call: -as follows: ?resent: Miss Baugh, Bertsche, Cathc:art,_ Hobart, Johnson, Kelly, Iauaten, Mosher, Rey olds,Thoits Earl 'Thomas, Mrs. -Margaret Thomas, wood Absent: Christensen, *nisler. tas to Acquis# Lion of 'iatribution Systems* The special purpose 'of this meeting:. was the consider- ation of the matter of the aequisition: of the s and electric distribution systems of the Pacific. `Gas and Electric Company in the Mayfield District. A detailed . report presented by the City Engineer to the Board of Works relati.ve.'to the purchase of these distribution systems,this report having been approved by the Board of Works', was read. A report was received from the Board of Works recommending_ the adoption :of resolutions on this matter. Resolution of intention No. 853, determining that the public interest and public necessity demand the acquisition by condemnation of the gas distribution .: system and the electric power and light distribution systems of the Pacific Gas and Electric Company in the Mayfield ..District, was read. This resolution determines that the -.necessary proceedings be taken to create a bonded indebtedness in the awn $75,000 for the acquisition of the gas system and $60,000for. the, acquisition of the electric system. This resolution, was :discussed, and on motion of Mosher and Kelly, was adopted by. unanimous; vote on roll call. On motion of Thomas and Cathcart, the matters _'in connection with . this' resolution of' intention were referred to Committees No. 1. and No. 4 for investigation,..with the request for a report at' the next meeting on February '24th, at which time the ordinance calling thebond- election willbe presented, Councilman Reynolds was excused ,,at: this time, Sz10. p.m., and was absent during the ::rest ;of. the meeting. Resolution No. 854'4 directing_the City Attorney to commence condemnation proceedings' in' the Superior ` Court . for the acquisition of the gas and. electric distribution systems of the Pacific Gas and Electric Company in :the Mayfield District,_ Was read, and on Motion of Wood and Bertsche, was passed by unanimous vote .on _roll call; Report on =Widening_ C:ambxid6e -Avenue A report from 'the Deputy -City. Attorney relative to the widening of Cambridge Avenue was received:. and referred . to: Committee No 4. Re;iuest of Board ..of •Sducati »n° A casurtication' was received from. the Board of Education request ng tbe `c;ance'llation.;of-.:taxes on certain Property acquired loy.,- .lard of Education' for school: purposes in July, 1929. A report:.was re•e0ed . from the ..City Attorney advising that these takes. be cancelled`, This matter was referred to Coranittee No 5 Request . to Plant Tree A communication was received from Fremont Unit #52, American Legion, Auxiliary, -requesting the:.priv.ilege of plants ng one ;;of the trees in the Plaza. On motion of Wood and Mrs. Thomas, this matter was referred to the .Boar_d_o.f Public Works with power to act.. Letter from Progressive League A, letter from the Progressive -:League relating to appropriations for the; bay shore development.:was received, and on motion` of Thoits and Bertsche,was referred, to Committee No. 1. After further discussion, on: motion_ of Cathcart and Bertsche,:-thi-s letter was also referred..ta:Committ:ee No. 5, to, consider in joint session with Committee No; 1. Non -Conforming Permits Granted A. report was received from the: City. Planning. Comnissi recommending- that non -conforming building permits be granted to L := H,. ,Grieb,; 760 Palo Alto Avenue;. to H. H. Hartman, 125 Middle,field-1oad -- and to N. Kildare,. 1009..High .Street. On motion ofTM Bertschee and Johnson, the Building Inspector was authorized tp .grant these permits_., . by. Unanimous...vote on roll call. Concerning.. Site for New Weil Referring to the matter of acquir..ing.,land at Colorado Avenue .4nd. AIMa Street for the construction of a well, a report was .received from Committees NO. 1..and No... 4 recommending that the Board of Works be. requested to look into the matter of obtaining ano+ther site for this well. This matter was referred to: the.. Board of Works. Appropriati:on for Dredging Wit: reference to the pequest of the Board of Works for an appropriation of $5000 to continue the dredging operations on bay shore land, a report was received from the :- joyi.nt committee composed of Committees No. 1 .and No. 4 stating thatupon .investigation it seems necessary that the dredging continuo to the Mountain View Slough in order to prevent the silting up.,:of the channel already dredged, and for this purpose the committee recommended that $1000 be appropriated from the unexpended balance of the general fund. On motion of;. Thoits :and Bertsche,,, this amount of $1000 was appropriated for this purpose from the unexpended balance of the general :fund, by unanimous vote on roll call. Report on Widening California Avenue A progress report from the joint committee, composed of Committees No. 1 and No. 4, upon the matter., of widening and improving California Avenue between the Southern Pacific right or way and El Camino Real, was received and placed on file. Bill Allowed Cn motion of Thpmas and Mosher, a claim from Skinner and Hammond in the amount of $615.00, covering special wor' in connection with the classification of accounts, ., inventories, etc., was allowed and warrant in payment.. of . the same was authorized, by unanimous vote on roll call,, ' Apnro pri l Cow appropriation repairing a. d+ Hawthorne Ave] at that time later. Attest: -Cit Appropriation for Repairing depression in Street Councilman Bertsche brought up , the matter of an appropriation made some months ago for . the purpose of repairing a depression in the street_at the intersection of Hawthorne Avenue and Waverley, Street. 'pis work was not done at that time and theappropriation omittedfrom the budget later. This matter was ;discussed, and .on motion of Wood and Bertsche, the Board of Works` was.. authorized to repair the depression in the street at this :intersection, the necessary amount of approximately $300..00. to be taken from the unappropriated balance of the generalfund, this by unanimous vote on roll call. Ad journment to Feb. 24, 1930 On motion of Mosher and Bertsche., the Council adjourned to February 24, 1930, at 7:30 p..m. in the City Eall.
