This matter, was discussed . at length:, and the terms
...)f the proposed lease contract were explained ,bythe City
t tox'ney. Dr. Sharp representing the, citizens who had offered
to underwrite the purchase of this property for the sum of
c?25,O00, to be: used. as a, decorative public park,, addressed the
Council. Pref. S`. 5. Seward, member of the Library Board,
wade the suggestion' that this property might be used at some
future time as, the location of -'z: new ,library.. The members of
the Council expressed their :viewson the matter, some stating
they would be in favor of adopting tb.is lease 'contract the
words. „Public use' .could be, substituted in the resolut for
the words "decorative pub .ic• park" . 'The suggestion wa then
made that the City nigcit retain title to the land, and purchase
the equipment for the hospital on a. lase aontre.ct.
The motion previously made by Thoits"' and Mrs. Thomas
to adopt the report ,of Committee Ne was 'then withdrawn,
ar.d the whole matter vas referred brick to Co amlttee No. 4, for
a report as to; whether= the ::purchase of this 'hand on a lease
contract, or :the purchase of, the hospital.;; equiprment . on a
contract basis:; would., be the .better: solution of the problem.
Counci1ran Thomas left at 9:15 p.m. and w.as absent for the
Easement ,for Sewer rest of the meeting.
A. :letter was received' from 'Norwood B. Smith referring
to a request from the. City En ineer for 'an easement 15 feet wide
along the northerly, lire ".of. the ' But:3_er .Tract at the corner of
.,:: barcadero Road and =`ewel i1:;"Road, stating that the owners of
this tract. are willing" .to convey this strip of, land to the County
of Santa Clara in exchange for- a grant deed from the County
to the .15 feet along the .westerly line' of the Butler Tract which
,as conveyed for the purpose of widening' 'Newell Road.
A resolution authorizing action to obtain an
easement along the Butler Tract for sewer pipe lines was read.

Assiiment of Standard 0i1 Co. Lease
A request was received from the Standard 011 Company
that the Council approves 'the as si p gnxaerxt` of its lease dated
June 1, 1929, for , a s:ervic e.: `station at University Avenue and E1
Camino Real.;, to she Standard Stations, Ina. This was discussed,
and. a recommerndationwas;' made by the City Attorney that
the request be approved. On motion of Mosher and Johnson,
the assignment of this lease to -the Standard Stations, Inc.
:as approved by unanimous vote on roll call.
Resignation of Ir. Roberts
The resignation ofrr.. Roger Roberts as temporary
member: of the Board of Safe ty ;was 'presented, witha request
newt a temporary member be .appointed 'to :serve during the illness
c.f Yr. Alfred Seale.
0n motion..of Ke1J.y and Cathcart, the resignation of
-y='. =:oberts was accepted, .to take effect when his successor is
appointed.
On motion of Mosher and Hobart, the appointment of
a temporary Member of the _Board of Safety to fill this vacancy
was postponed until the next meeting.

Referring to the letter of Mr. Frank Hoge of
January 14th requesting cancellation of taxes on the propert;
of the • Stanford. »ater Company,a report' was received frog
the. eputy : City, Attorney stating that there is no double
taxation in :this case and that the law demands that all
Property including that of the grater company be taxed.
This matter was - discussed, and on. motion of Hobart and Bertsc�
was . referre'd to Co mitt ee No. 4. ,
Deed.s. for Street Openings
Deeds of dedication were presented from the Palo
Alto Land. Company, from Frank B. and. Josephine W. L4:veae
and from M. .,L. Pitman, covering certain land conveyed for �
widening o'f Hamilton Av enue and the opening of Center Street.

Councilman Bertsche informed the Council that the
American Legion is planning to give an entertainment in the
Stanford Theater on the night of February 27, 1931, for the
benefit of the unemployment fund, and . they wish to have
per .;ssion to stretch a large banner across University :venue
to advertise this entertainment.
On motion of Mosher and Bertsche., permission to
put up .this banner was granted, the work to be done under
:the, supervision of the Board of Works.
On motion of Kelly and Mosher, the Council aijoui'
at 30 pew., to meet on Wednesday, February 25, 1931, at
7:30 p.m. in the City Hall.
