' Palo Alto met in special session on this- date at ' 7:30 p.m., for the purpose of establishing the tax rate for the 'Ci'ty::of. Palo Alto for the fiscal year 1934-1955, and for ' the co isideration ;of such other business coming before the Council. Absent: Cathcart, Christensen, Mitchell, Mosher, Vood. follows: The Mayor read the order calling for this meeting as flAs mayor of the :City of Palo Alto, I hereby call a special meeting of the Council of the City of Palo Alto, to convene at the council chamber in the City Hall. at Palo Alto, at the hour of 7:30 p.m., Monday, August 27th, 1934, for the purpose of establishing the tale rate for the City of Palo Alto for the fiscal ;year, ,11934-35„ and for the consideration of such other business as may come before the Council. "The City Clerk is hereby directed to give a written hotice of this meeting, toeach member of the Council of the City of Palo Alto, and to enter this order on the minutes of said special meeting cf, the Council." Ordinance Fixing Tax Rate Ordinance No. 637, fixing the tax rate for the fiscal year 1934-1935 at 41.20 per V.00.00 of assessed value, was read, and on motion of Judson and •onham, was adopted as an emergency ordinance by unanimous vote on roll call. Resolution of Respect' for Alva C. Hobart The Mayor " spoke I to "the Q.ouncil of M . Alva C. ho oar. t formerly Councilman and .Mayor of the City of Palo Alto. zee s referred to the service given to the City by Mr. Aobart, andthe loss greatly felt by all at his being taken, and further stated that , he had ordered a floral piece in the name of the Council to be placed by his casket On motion of Thoits and Bonham, and receiving the unanimous vote of the Council, the following Resolution of Respect for Alva. C. ilobart was requested spread upon the Council minutes, there to remain as a permanent record, a copy to be sent to Mr. Hobart f s family: "BE IT RESOLVED_by the City-ouncil of the City of Palo Alto, that, record,. should be made of the distinguished service rendered by Alva C. aobart to this city. "Elected membereof. the :City Council to take office July 1,, 192,1, , b.e; served continuously until July 1, 1931, an' men period of ten years. He was elected Mayor for the -year beginning July 1, 1926, was re-elected the fol1ovving . year .:but declined to serve"; a third term. For several years he was Council representative on the City Planning Commission, .where he demonstrated great faith in the City's future and showed a vivid imagination of the developments possible in these favored surroundings. "At this time he was designated a member of the Bay 6hore Lands Committee, and as such was responsible for the :, delicate ` and important negotiations that led to the acquisition of a thousand acres along the. shores of . an z ranci sco nay from Cooley's Landing at the foot of the .ay road in San Mateo County, to Wilson's Landing at the foot of the Bmbarcadero. He foresaw that future generations would rise up and call him and his colleagues blessed when the bayshore lands have developed . into a beautiful iecreatiof center and possi bll, industrial center in years to come.
