A letter from the League of California Municipalities
concerning "; continuance-. of `the C.W.A.. program, "'C W. A. projects and
the gas " t for' street improvemeets,' was received.
On. motion 1of Jud�t:on and Mosher, the Mayor was authorized
to communicate `with" the; necessary authorities urging ` the continuance
of ' the C. W. A. progran.
Resolution .of Redwood` -City Council
A. copy of a resolution adopted by the City Council of
Redwood City, urging a point use off transbay bridge backs and
other faci"li:ties by the'. SouthernPacific' Company and Western Pacific
::Railway =Company .between' Niles -and. San Francisco via Redwood City,
was received ' and placed on ,file.

a meeting in San ?rancisco on January 25th, at 10 A.M. to discuss

Attorney announced= " their 'intention:. of attending this meeting .

A. quit claim deed was presented, from the City of Palo Alto
to•John Benson, in connection` with the closing of Cambridge Avenue.
It' was explained that this deed was for the purpose of correcting
a' former deed and granting to Mr. Benson; an additional ten.. feet
of land. This was approved by Committee No. 1. On motion of
fiood.and Thoits, the` Mayor and City Clerk were authorized to execute
this quitclaim deed on behalf of the City," by unanimous vote on roll
call.
In re- Bniargin; Mayfield Library
A communication was received from the Chairman of the Library
Board concerning -estimates. of cost for additional equipment needed
for toe enlargement- of ..the `Mayfield Branch • Library, n addition to
the :estimate previously made`' by ,the Board of Works. Committee No.
reported that it. : approved the policy of enlarging the Mayfield Branch
Library'." leaving the: . time > of" enlarging to be decided later
Committee No: 4 arid'. the Council. Committee No. 4 had n.o report
to make- on this matter at _ this time,. and the matter was 'held in
abeyance.

Councilman Christensen stated that he wished to bring up
a matter at this time concerning : the Mayoras office, and asked that
the Mayor .leave the room during: the. ".discussion. The Mayor was
excused. and Councilman' Cathcart took the chair
Councilman ,Christensen called attention to the importance
of the work the Mayor i d.o Lng'0 , and .-tkpnesse.d :his opinion: that the
ifay=or''-shou:id be' relieved : of - the expenses, for. transportation. and
other items" incidental to carrying,; on ;the work of, ?is office, which
requires agreat deal :of tme. This matter was discussed, and on

appropriated.from` the :C.ontingent k"und. for the ;use of the Mayor for
transportation` and other 'minor anrd personal' expenses necessary in
the performance of his 'dut es as Mayor, this to be retroactive to
cover the ;entire fiscal year, .:and -the Auditor was authorized to
turn, -:.over to .the Mayor each; month .a' warrant- for 425.00, without
requiring the: Mayor 'to :make: - an itemized statement. This motion was
adopted by 'cnanimousy vote.-oxi roil call.
The Mayor then ` returned to thechair, and upon being
informed of the Council's "action, he expressed his appreciation for
the thoughtfulness- which prompted this action.

A report was received from the Board of Public Works
recommending:the"appointment, of Messrs Aleok Clark 'Frank H

In re Shelter
A communication was received from the Board :of Safety
-.recommending that a request be made of the County authorities
that the County paya portion of', the amount expended for the relief
of county Itinerants. On motionof Collins and Judson, the Mayor
was. requested to address ` a letter on behalf of the Council to the
Board: of Supervisors of the County setting forth the petition as
requested .by the • Board. ' eof - Safety.
In re. C.W.A. Funds
The .3ayyor broaght up at this time the matter of the
wages pa ;c under th.e:'Cj.vi,l Works Administration, which has set a
minimum -age s'ca'le - of : 45. '' cent's per hour for unskilled.: "tabor, and
41..10; for if : ,ec .labor.• He .stated that the C.W.A. workers in
San Mteo Count' .and i tber. counties in. California are receiving
60' cants per .hour;' whereas .those in. Santa Clara County are . receiving
the tinimum of 45 "gents per hour, which is a small allowance,
especially- since the hours,,:have been reduced from. 30 hours a week
to, 24 hours a week This matter was discussed, and on Action of
Kelly and Bonham, the Mayor, was authorized to make a request to the

Unemployment Relief for. an , appropriaton of 4,280.00 to carry on

relief . of men for the:-sameperiod.. It' was reported that Committees
Nos.: 3 ` and _to <whom this re uest� had --been referred by the Mayor,.

In re Federal Shelter for Boys,
Councilman ;Collins, chairman of the special committee
appointed. ,on January 8th to' consider. the proposition made, by the
Federal Government; to rent a 'portion of the Federal 'telegraph,
building for the establishment of a ,Federal shelter for boys, as
outlined by Capt. ' J. v.Glov:er., made a report for the special committee.
He stated,. that -the ,committee, after careful consideration' of t.his
'"latter, had recommended t tat a portion of the ?edera1-.Telegraph
building<` be leased to -,the .Federal; government' for this purpose;.
that later it was I:earned`uriofficially that offers of other sites
for. a boys' shelter had " been =made'; t o tne:. Federal Gov:ernMent, and
that other plans, hadbeen' made, but that no ;official.notification
of any change : of. plans bas been -received: ,by the City from Capt.

Kelly, the Clerk was instructed to advise `Capt. Glover that the

'like a report from _him' as to whether' or`not the Federal government
is stil.l interested in the proposition to lease a certain piece of
property owned by the City..

Ordinance No. 619, to be known as the Electrical Ordinance
of the City of ' Palo- Alto, previously recommended for adoption'. by
the Board ° of Works and Committee No. 11. was given second reading
and discussed. On motion of Thoits and Bonham, this ordinance was
adopted by unanimous -vote onroll call.:
Ordinance on Powers ;of.' Advisory Board
Ordinance No. 620, amending Sec. 452 of Codified 0rdina-ne
No. 3 with reference to thepowers of the Advisory Board on
Commercial Amusements, prohibiting the sale of children's admissions
to certain motion pictures„ was given second reading. On motion
of Mosher and Johnson; t'hi°s ordinance wasadopted by unanimous
vote on roll call.
