Lhe Council of the City of Palo Alto met on this date
at; 7=3u p.m., pursuant to adjournment of .iLay 15, 1935, with
:iiayor Thomas presiding. Roll call as follows:
Present= Blois, Bonham, Brown, Cathcart, Collins, 1/4-randail,
Judson, r:eJ ly, Mitchell, posher, Stephens, Thoits,
Thomas.
Absent: Green, Wood.
Election Returns
The special order of the, day was the canvass of the
returns of the second election held on May 21, 1935, for the
election of three councilmen for the term of six years.
councilmen Bonham and Stephens were appointed tellers, and the
Council took a recess while the tellers canvassed the votes.

When the report of the tellers was ready, tb.e Council
reconvened. The tellers reported that the total number of votes
cast was found to be 2680, and that the number of votes cast
for each candidate was as follows:

The canvass showed that, the tree candidates receivi

Ordinance Ao. 655, declaring the result of the second,
general municipal election held on May 21, 1935, was read, and;,
on .motion of Thoits and. Mitchell, was adopted by unanimous vote
on roll call. This ordinance declared that J. Byron .s1ois,
Glenn w. Goddard and Robert L. Richards were elected as
c-,uncilmerj for the term of six years from July 1, 1935.

inviting the Council member's and city officials to participate
in 4 Fourth of July celebration in Santa Clara. This was
referred to the Mayor for a reply.

Questionnaire . of merchants. Assn. on Armistice 1%ay
A questionnaire was received from the Merchants Associa-
tion asking that the City, as a member of the Merchants Association,
express itself on the matter of Armistice Day closing.. The City
Clerk .was directed to reply and state that the offices in the city
hail are closed on Armis vice Dey as provided by L, resolution of.
the City Council, but that the Council does not feel that it
wishes to express an opinion, as to whether the merchants should
close their stores or not:

communication has received from Councilman George L.
Green, asking that he be granted a leave of absence from the
Council and committee meetings for the unexpired portion of his
tern, as it is necessary for him to be out of the United States
for several months. On Notion of Thous and Blois, this request
was granted.
It- was noted that Councilmen. Green was a member of
Committees No. 3 and 5, end the eLayor stated that he mould be
glade to appoint .a substitute member on these committees if the
chairmen think it desirable.

Legislative E"a.i:;.etin No. 1.0 of the League of California.
Municipalities concerning bilis before the State Legislature %as
received. Particular deference was m;a.ae to the proposal to
exempt automobiles from:.. county and city personal property taxes
in order that the State -May impose an increased state tax on
automobiles to increase state revenues, the League urging that
the Council send telegrams to the Senator and :assemblyman from
this district asking them to oppose this measure. Reference v.as
also made to Assembly Bill 1279 which would drohioit cities from
imposing business license taxes upon persons selling or delivering
goods at wholesale, the League requesting that this bill be
opposed also.
These matters were discussed, end on motion of Judson a::c
Blois, the Mayor was authorised to communicate with the Senator
and Assemblyman of this district if necessary, urging that these
bills be defeated
This Bulletin, which also contained information about
the Gasoline Tax and other proposed bills, was placed on file
the City Clerk.

to file the complaint on behalf of the City.

A report was received from Committee L . 4 recommending
that in order to make .refunds of overpayment on .delinquent taxes,
as allowed by the Council at its last meeting, the sup of $271.I0
be appropriates from the unappropriated balance of the General
Fund. On motion of Kelly and brown, this recommendation was
approved and the appropriation allowed by unanimous vote on roll
call.

A recommendation was received from the :.Tanning
Commission that the setback line on the northeasterly sine of
Hamilton Avenue for ,a distance of 75 feet northwesterly from
West Crescent Drive be changed :from 40 feet to 30 feet.
Ordinance »o. 656, changing this setback ..ine as recommended, Y/as
read., and on motion of Mosher and Judson, was passed as an.
emergency ordinance by -unanimous vote on roll call.
A bill was presented, in. the amount of 4e596.86, for
the pay of election officers who served at the elections on IaY
14 and gay 21st, at the mate of $5.00 plus 14 per vote for ead1-1
election officer at each election, and for rent of polling-.

On motion of Kitchell and Mosher, these bills were
approved and warrants authorized in payment of the sane, by
unanimous vote on roll call.

EeZ erenee was made to the 'motion made .t the last
Council meeting that $.300.00 be, appropriated for. the purpose of
installing lights in Ei Camino Park for`night baseball,
action having been deferred at that meeting because it was
understood that ten votes were needed for an appropriation to
a Boara ana only nine councilmen: were present.
On motion of Collins and Judson, this appropriation
of e600.00 was authorized for this purpose, to bt taken ,from
the unappropriated balance,, by unanimous vote on roll call,
Caere being thirteen councilmen present.
