The Council of the City of Palo Alto met in special session on this date at 7:45 P.M., pursuant to the following call: "As Mayor of the City of Palo Alto, i ere:oy call a special meeting of the Council of the City of Palo Alto, to convene at the council chamber in the. city hail in the City of Palo Alto, at the hour of 7:45 .P.1., Monday, May 24, 1;;37, for tine .purpose of considering a proposed ordinance prohibiting picketing in the City of Palo Alto, and for the consideration of such other business as may come before the Council"; and to the following supplemental notice: "As Mayor of the City of Palo Alto, 1 hereby cull special meeting of the Council of the City of Palo .Alto, to convene at the council chamber in the city hall in the City of Palo Alto, at the hour or. 7:45 P. Monday, lay 24, 1937, for the purpose of considering, in addition to the proposed ordinance prohibiting picketing, the fol-?o,ing matters: "1. Proposed ordinance calling a special election to be held on June 15, 1937, for the purpose of submitting to the voters an ordinance providing for a system of retirement and death benefits for officers and employees of the City, to be Known as the 'Palo Alto City Employees' Retirement 6ystem' . tt2 . Request of Board of eori s for additional = unds in certain accounts, as follows: "That. Petitions, with ninety-three signatures, protesting against the adoption tion of 'the proposed ordinance, were received and placed On file. - On Motion of Thomas and .Blois, the recommendations of the Board. of Safety 'and _Committee No. 2 were accepted. Mr. Clarence Brooks, a representative of organized labor, addressed the Council stating that the labor organiza- tions t.i.ons were in accord .with the recommendation made by t_:o;u i ttee Ao . 2 and would not tolerate any violence- or any activity which- would --in- any way be a. nuisance to the ppublic. A motion was .made by Thomas, seconded by Stephens, t:_a t the ordinance be adopted. Coucxcilman Saisman came at 8:20 P.M., during the discussion of this matter, and was ::resent during the rest of t meeting. he was also of the opinion that June i5th was not a desirable c ate After further discussion, Lounci.w.man Costello sugestew that a vote to taken first on the date and then on the ado_ tion of the ordinance. The motionpreviously made by Thomas and Stephens for .:the adoption of the ordinance was withdrawn. h motion was then mace by Thomas, seconded by i4itcnell, that the Council go on record as favoring the date of June 15, 1937, as the date for a special election to vote on tne euestion of a retirement plan.
