The Council cif -the City of Palo Alto met in special; session on this date a:t-10`YE00 A.M., pursuant to the folloWing call: "As Mayor of the City of Palo Alto, 1 hereby tali a special meeting of the Counciil of the City of Palo Alto, to convene at tie council chamber in -the city hall in the City of Palo Alto, at the hour of 1O:©G' A.M., londay, November: 28, 1938, for the purpose of considering a proposed lease with the Coast Printing Corporation of Warehouse lvo. 2, formerly known as the Federal` Telegraph Building, and for the purpose of . authorizing the Mayor and City Clerk to execute said lease on behalf of the City." :Ljor Salsman presided "a"nd , roll call was as follows: .Present: Blois, Bonham, Cashel, Costello, Cypher, Goddard, Mrs. Merner, Mosher, Richards, Salsman, Thoits. Absent: Collins, Mitchell, Thomas, Wood. Rental of Space in Warehouse No. 2 Reference was made to a report of the Board of Public Works of November 17, 1938, recommending g that the Council enter into a lease with the -Coast Printing Corporation for the leasing of a portion of Warehouse Ao. 2 in accordance with she terms of a memorandum of agreement attached to this report.: A report was also received from Committee loo. 1, uncle: date of November 21, 1938, concurring with the recommenda- tion of the Board of Works that the Council enter into a lease rith the Coast Printing Corporation, in accordance with the terms of the memorandum of agreement as amended by the committee. The Council was advised that the memorandum of agreement was not executed by the Corporation or by the City, but its terms were incorporated in the lease now before the Council, which has been signed by the officers of the Coast Printing Corporation. A report was received from the Board of Works of iovember 26, 1938, recommending the lease to the Council for approval. The terms of the lease agreement were read and exp wined by the City Attorney. This lease provides for the. leasing of the major portion of Warehouse No. 2 and certain 5 'ounds surrounding the same for a period of ten years with O. Lion to the Corporation to extendthe`tree lease for an additional Five- r�•�:r period. It>*also provides" for the City s consent to the subletting of a portion of the premises to the Lane Publishing Company. A -certified :copy of the minutes of the Board of Tri.isvees of Stanford University giving their consent to the easing of the property was presented. y resolution No. 1228, authorizing the Mayor and City. �o execute the lease on behalf of the City,, w s reed, ,end on motion of Mosher and Cashel, was ado_ ted by unanimous vote on rol1. call...:: Restate Broker's Commission A communication was receives from William A. dud ett, real estate broker, concerning the commission of $351.00 due him in :connection with the leasing of the warehouse. Be referred to the verbal agreement thatthe lessee would pay tae commission despite the fact that such an agreement is contrary to customary practice, and stated that he believed it was unjustto ask the lessee to pay the commission. He further stated that,' if it is the Council's conclusion that the service rendered does not justify the City's paying the comma 5siox3 of '351.00, he would waive all claims on the City for payment of the same, but expressed the hope that the Council would give the matter serious consideration. . Iu igett' s communication was referred to Committee No. .1 with the direction that the committee report back to the Council, A. 0. Bolman, member of the Board of. Works addressed the Council in connection with this matter,.. advi_szng that the Board had discussed the qu,esti.on, of the .real estate broker's commission ` axdthat it was the understanding, of the Board that ;:the City was to be relieved of the payment of any commission. isposition .of, Agencies now occupxing Warehouse e question of the disposition of various agencies now occupying portions of Warehouse No 2 was brought up. The Director. of Utilities advised that an effort is being made to find other quarters for these organizations; that the Chamber of Commerce is assisting in working out this problem and that the Board of Education has offered the use of one of its buildings - for the Womenls Service League. Mrs. E. 3•: Thomas, President of the. Women's Service League, was present and spoke of the difficulties involved if the League is required to move immediately since the location of itsnew quarters has not yet been decided upon. The Director of Utilities advised that the Coast Printing Corporation: wishes to occupy the center part of the building immediately;. that the upstairs part now occupied by the, Service League will not have to be vacated at once but that the ;sales root" and show room in the center of tree building will have to be moved. He stated that Mr. 3. R. Overturf, secretary of the Board of Education, originally suggested tit the Women's Service ;League might use the Sherman .school util the end of the school year and advised him in a telephone conversation on this date that he wished toconfer with Mrs. Thomas as to the amount of space needed, pit a .the thought t: t suitable quarters may be available in either the Sherman Scilool or one of the "other school buildings.
