At that time, `the Counc i . had' received;; information that _Stanford
University; was. opposed to;: the.leasing::. of any of the highway
frontage for co reial . purposes. Since then, communications
have .been. recejved;'fr®a the Standard Stations, Inc.. and from
the- Shell 01.1 'Con pang requesting reconsideration of the matter:
and a, -, urther •c nicatlor ;:.has been received from Stanford
Unverslty.
The communication of May 13th from the Standard
Stations Inc., was read, the company requesting reconsideration
of the matter: •of :leasing the south gore at Palo Alto Avenue
e.nd E3. Camino Real, with the understanding that the service
station would; be'So' conistruct d and the premises so landscaped
as to meet with; -the.. full approval of the. Council and the
University.
A, letter of May 27th from the Shell Oil Company,
re -submitting its offer to lease the south gore of this inter-
section was also read.
A communication, : dated May 16th, from J. Hugh Jackson,
Acting Comptroller of,- Stanford University, was - received,
statingthat the University .will consent to the subleasing : of
the two -corners of El Camino :; Real and Palo Alto Avenue for
service -station purposes, subject to the provision that thee
University- shall receive one-half of the rental paid for these
sites. Mr. Jackson vas present and .addressed the Council,
advising that since hi.s..., communication vas written he had
discussed the matter with-. President Wilbur of the University
who expreascs:ed .:the hope that; .no lease would be .given to the site
on the.northerly corner;: between Palo Alto Avenue and the creek,
and in': fact preferred that no lease be given to either corner.

the granting of leases to the Standard and Shell companies. i
Mr.:: Kent Thoits, a member of the Planing Commission,
explained the reasons for the recommendation of the Co=ission concex

It vas moved by Thomas, seconded by ThOits, and
carried that ,the Council go on recordas re -affirm Its
decision that neither the northerlynor southerly corners of
Palo ;Alto Avenue and . E1 Camino Real be made available for
service station purposes. Councilman Cypher did _`not vote on
the -motion

concerning the celebration of the :fiftieth : anniversary of the

October, 1941, and suggesting that the Mayor appoint Palo Alto
Cormittee, to serve -as .one, -of the ernmnittees being organized
to give :attention 'to apecia1 ctiviti es in, oonnect1on with the
program, and :.thatiuch funds as may be necessary for the support
of the activities of the Palo Alto Committee be provided by the
City.
