TO GREER STONE AS 2024 MAYOR
WHEREAS, Greer Stone was first elected to the Palo Alto City Council in 2020, and reelected in 2024, serving as Vice Mayor in 2023 and as Mayor in 2024; and
WHEREAS, Greer Stone is a committed advocate for youth mental health and well-being. Soon after becoming Mayor, Greer Stone formed the Youth Mental Health and Wellbeing Taskforce. This taskforce is comprised of mental health experts
from Stanford University, PAUSD, the City of Palo Alto, nonprofit organizations, and students from the community, all working together to address youth mental health service gaps; and
WHEREAS, on February 22, 2024, Greer Stone hosted Victoria, Crown Princess of Sweden, and Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis, at the Green Transition Summit, alongside other global leaders, in an effort to urge Silicon Valley and the
world to prioritize sustainable technology and lead the charge toward shaping a sustainable future; and
WHEREAS, Mayor Stone convened a diverse advisory group and hosted a series of meetings involving members
from both sides of the Israel-Hamas War debate. Greer Stone, along with his Council colleagues, issued a Unity Statement on May 6, 2024. The goal of the statement was to promote understanding, empathy, and open the door to healing within the
community; and
WHEREAS, Mayor Stone helped the city navigate an unusually challenging year by providing steadfast leadership
and fearlessly standing up against those who incited fear and division in Palo Alto. He defiantly spoke out against all forms of hate and championed policies to reduce incidents of hate speech during public meetings in order to create a space where
all residents feel safe and included; and
WHEREAS, under Greer Stone’s leadership, one of the Council's priorities for 2024 is Housing for Social & Economic
Balance. In 2024, the State of California certified Palo Alto’s 2023-2031 Housing Element. This certification is pivotal, as the Housing Element will guide future housing production, as well as housing-related programs and policies; and
WHEREAS, Mayor Stone visited Palo Alto’s sister cities—Tsuchiura, Japan; Albi, France; and Heidelberg, Germany—and hosted delegations from these and other sister cities around the world. These efforts aimed to foster stronger
and more prosperous relationships globally; and
WHEREAS, Greer’s tenure as Mayor exemplifies his integrity, passion, and dedication to the betterment of Palo Alto,
its residents, and its business community.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Palo Alto does hereby honor and
commend Greer Stone for his outstanding public service, and records the appreciation of the Council, residents, and businesses for his meritorious service and commitment as a Palo Alto Mayor.
