RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALO ALTO
RECOGNIZING DR . J. E. WALLACE STERLING'S CONTRIBUTIONS
TO THE PALO ALTO -STANFORD COMMUNITY AND EXPRESSING
GOOD WISHES FOR HIS RETIREMENT
WHEREAS, Dr. J. E. Wallace Sterling has serv ed as President
of Stanford University since 1949; a nd
W HEREAS, Dr. Ste rling, du ring his t enu re as President, has
ser ved with dignity, spirit, purpose, dir ecti on and inspi ration;
an d
WHEREAS, the "Sterling E ra" at Stanford University has been
uniquely pro ductive and has been marked by achiev ement and glory;
and
WHEREAS, this scho lar -e xecutive, through his intelligent
and c apable administration, has met the t remendous ch allenges
posed by this great institution of higher le arning, has made
a great univ ersity even greater and, in enhancing the p ositi on of
Stanford Unive rsity, has also e nhanced the City of Pal o Alto;
a nd
WHEREAS, Dr. Steling has guided Stanford University in
many co operativ e efforts with the City of Palo Alto during this
pe riod of their greatest joint endeavorgs,: in nego tiations
invo lving the Palo Alto -Stanfor d Hospital, the Stanfor d Industrial
Park, in areas of tra ffic contro l and circulation, in developing
natio nally -reco gnized programs of cu ltural achiev ement for
citize ns of the Sta nfo rd and Pa lo Alto communities to enjoy and
in many other areas of mutual intere st and conce rn; a nd
WHEREAS, the City of Pa lo Alto desires to pay tribute to
Dr. Ster ling for his yea rs of dedicated leader ship in the

bett erment of ac ad emi c community life and in the o rderly and
intelligent devel opment of the Palo Alto -Sta nford area;
and
WHEREAS, the City of P alo Alto also desires to extend its
o fficial appr eciati on f or these contributions and its good
wishes to Dr. Sterling in his retirement and his new position
as Cha nc ellor of Stanf ord U niversity.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City of Pal o
Alto , California, does hereby extend to Dr. J. E. Wallace
Sterling its gra teful appreciation f or his lasti ng c ont ributions
to the community and its best wishes for go od h ealth, c ontinued
success and pe rsona l ani professional fulfillment in th e years
to co me.
