RESOLUTION OF THE C OUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALO ALTO
URGING ITS REPRESENTATIVES IN CONGRESS TO SUPP ORT
STRICTER GUN CONTROL LEGISLATION
W HEREAS, the numbe r of pers ons killed in the United States
a nn ually as a direct result of fi rea rms now numbers in the
thousa nds, an d
WHEREAS, thes e thousands of i nt ended and accid ent al victims
struck down .among us by firearm s are comprised of rich and poor,
the fa mous and the unknown, the aced and children, alike, and
WHEREAS, guns an d wea pons of all kinds may be obtain ed with
unbe lievable ease acro ss this nation by mi nors, the addi ct ed,
alcoholics, the demente d, a nd the criminal elem ent am ong us, a nd
WHEREAS, the problem of co ntrolling the sal e and dist ribution
of guns an d o ther we apons is a local and statewide m att er, and
is one particularly s ubject to nationa l c ontrol, and
WHEREAS, the Congre ss of the United Sta tes has passed
H.R. 5037, Title 4 of whic h covers the subject of gun cont rol, and
WHEREAS, the Preside nt a nd othe r prominent le aders of the
nation have urge d that even stricter contro ls than tho se set
fo rth in H. R. 5037 be enacted,
NOW, T H!PEFORE, the Council of the City of Palo A lto DOES
RESOLVE as follows:
1. We hereby a pplaud the Congr ess for its pass age of
Title 4 of H.R. 5037 as a con structive first ste p in the
s olutio n to this aggrava ted problem.
2. We hereby ur ge our representative an d sen ators in the
Con gre ss of the Un ited States to suppo rt e ven stricter legis-
lation for the co ntrol of firearms than is repre sented by
H. R. 5037.

3. Th e City Clerk is directed to transmit a c opy of this
resolutio n to Congressman G ubse r and to Sen ators K uchel, Murphy
and Ma nsfield .
