HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESO 4082y.r ORIGINAL RESOLUTION NO. 4082 RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALO ALTO . REAFFIRMING SUPPORT OF THE ASSOCIATION OF BAY AREA GOVERNMENTS WHEREAS, the City of Palo Alto recognizes that Regional Government is a fact, whether in the form of proliferated special purpose agencies of the Bay Area, or the more than fifty ABAG-type organizations throughout the country; and WHEREAS, the City of Palo Alto is aware that the need for regional solutions in the San Francisco Bay. Area dates back to the San Francisco proposal in 1912 of consolidation of the Bay Area counties to undertake the Retch Betchy project, and considerable state legislation from 1914 on, in regard to federated city -county governments; and WHEREAS, the City of Palo Alto has supported ABAG since its beginnings in 1951 and became a charter member and active partici- pant in strengthening the organization; and WHEREAS, the City of Palo Alto approved in principle the recommendations of the Goals and Organizations Committee for a more efficient and effective organization; and WHEREAS, the City of Palo Alto joined ABAGin support of state legislation towards the establishment of a regional Bay Area Govern- ment, and is awaiting the report of the Joint Committee on Regional. Bay Area Organization led by Assemblyman John Knox; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by theCouncilof the City of Palo Alto that it does hereby urge the cities and counties of the Bay Area to reaffirm their support of. Regional Government for the solution of the compounding . problems of the area; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the City of Palo. Alto urges the cities and counties of the Bay Areato assess the benefits and progress in Regional Goverzmtent'in the past seven years, -and to - 1 - acknowledge along with federal and state governments, the weaknesses of procedures, and to make these discoveries work for them towards the establishment of an ever more responsive, responsible and efficient organization for the solution of our areawide concerns.
