session en this -date at 8 p.m ,.. with rayor Swain presiding.

A communication from the Palo Alto Gas Company in re-
gard try the purchase of the plant of 'said company by the City was
read and ordered filed...
Re )ort of Com. 41 --Gas Mains.
A report from Committee #1 recommending that the ques-
tion of the extension of the eine of the Palo Alto Gas Company
be referred to the State Railroad Commission was read and on mo-
tion of Wing and Lakin the report was approved.
Report on Sale of Ponds,
Chairman Wing.. of Committee ,74 reported that $25,000 of
the Palo Alto City Bonds of 1912 had been sold and moved that the
City Treasurer be authorized to sell the e8, 000 of said iseue
remaining unsold. The motion was :seconded. by Petersoa and after
discussion wa -lost b y the following vote on roll call;

Nuisance Ordered Abated.
"Mayor Swain -announced that this was the time set for
the Federal Construction Co. to show c cue. why the nui: ance cre-
ated by the smoke' from its paving plant e au Ld :got be abated.
Attorney Frederick ;Schneider appeJared. for aai::: company andstat-
ed that the company was ready to make any changes needed to abate
the nuisance of which complaint was made. S. P. Doyle of said com-
pany also declared his company ready to do whatever is necessary
to remedy conditions.
Councilman ,Peterson.. called attention. to the ill -kept
sidew=alks and the prevalence, of amoke and dust from the opera-
tion of the plant, ineieting that. immediate remedial faction del
eceeeary. Mrs. -Roberta LaParge aleo spoke i e r the residents
'affected. stating that the conditions are intolerable.
Or. motion .of Wing and Peterson, the ratter was referred
to the Board of Public Safety and the City Attorney with instruc-
tio:xs to abate, the nuisance at once,

On motion of Wing and Peterson the Board of Public Works
Tess instructed to investigate the need of s:dewal is in the vi-
cinity of .High Street, Charning Avenue and Alma Street, and report
at the next meeting . of the Co'azzci'l.

Wing and Ackley moved that substitute Section #15 be
adopted.
On motion of Wing and Lak n said section was aMended by
omitting the. third:paragraph.
On motion .of. Jordan and Hettinger aaid.section was sl
ed by making tb.e +charges in the first paragraph 1/5 of . a center
front foot per month and 30 cents per month on all improved
misses,

Jordan asked • o be excused from voting as he had not
read the fitai•nar:ce,
Hettinger stated that the ordinance did not meet his
views in making the garbage charges a lien upon the property,
but that he wouldnot vote against it.
The motion to adopt the ordinance was passed without
opposition on roll call, Jordan not voting.
Reports Ordered Piled.
The report of the Treasurer for June, 1914, was read
and ordered filed.
The Board of Public Werke asked for further time to wire
a report on paving Cowper Street and the receeee t was granted.
