RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALO ALTO
URGING A FAVORABLE VOT:: FOR THE CREATION OF THE
SANTA CLARA COUNTY TRANSIT DISTRICT ACT, AS AMENDED,
FORMULATED BY TF4' SANTA CLARA COUNTY TRANSPORTATION
POLICY COMMITTEE AND THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS
DESIGNATED AS MEASURE A ON THE NOVEMBER 3, 1970
GENERAL ELECTION BALLOT
WHEREAS, since 1965 the County of Santa Clara, in cooperation
with all of the cities in the county, has studied the need for a
comprehensive transportation plan for the whole county, proposing
a ballot proposition and holding a special election on Septamber
16, 1969; and
WHEREAS, although said measure was defeated, the Palo Alto
vote was 53% yes and 46% no, indicating the favorable interest of
the residents of this city in a mass transit program proposal, and
voicing the electorate's approval of mass transit which is also
reflected in pertinent recommendations in Palo Alto's Master
Transportation Planning Program; and
WHEREAS, the county, with its fifteen cities, has an urgent
need for a public mass transit system which would encourage better
land use and development, enhance and maintain the natural environ-
ment, and preserve the ecology of Santa Clara County; and
WHEREAS, the proposal that is

WHEREAS, the creation of a unified transit system establishes
the mechanism for coordinated, comprehensive transit services in
Santa Clara County without regard to specific -jurisdiction and
with regard to improving the quality of life in the Valley, offering
a combined, extensive, modern system of rapid transit, complemented
by appropriate feeder service.
NOW, THEREFORE, the Council of the City of Palo Alto does
iESOLVE as follows:
SECTION 1. That the Council of the C1.ty of Palo Alto declares
its support of Measure A creating the Santa Clara County Transit
District Act, as amended, on the ballot for the general election
-to be held on November 3, 1970.
SECTION 2. That the Council of the City of Palo Alto requests
that other cities give their support to this program.
SECTION 3. The City Clerk be and she hereby is authorized
and directed to file a copy of this resolution with the Board of
Supervisors of Santa Clara County, the Santa Clara County Trans-
portation Policy Committee and the City Councils of each of the
fifteen cities in Santa Clara County.
