Request of Elks Club for Fire Protection A letter,was received from Eric J. Silva, Chairman of the. Board: of ::Trustees :of; the Palo Alto Elks Club, requesting the Council;`te give favorable consideration to a contract for stand- by fire protection' for the Elks Club property at 4249 El Camino Real. The City Manager. pointed 'out that the property is.lo- cated outside the city limits He -advised that a similar request was made to his office some ' time ago by Mr. Raup Miller, who handles the ineurarce fox' the Elks Club, that the matter was con- sidered. by, the City Manager in consultation with the City' Attorney and Fire Chief and that the recuest as presented at that time was denied. Electric Company in :the amount of $4,094.,25, incl-ud;ing sales tax, be accepted. on :notion of Porter and Hanley, the bid of the S"angamo Electric Company was accepted Bids on Street —Sweeper' The City Manager reported on the bids received on Marche3, 1951+,. on a stre.et.sweeper,.with the recommendation that the bid of George L;. Avery :for a_n Elgin Sweeper in the amount of $8,299.69 -.be accepted. On motion of Huston and Porter, this bid was accepted. Bids on Parking Meters A report was.aiso made by the City Manager on the bids received on March 3', 1954, on,.parking.meters, with a recommenda- tion from Committee No. 2 and the..staff that if automatic meters. are'to .be purchased; the bid of the Park -O -Meter Company be ac cepte"d,':at-price of:$53.67 per meter. A ;mo.tion-was made by Simpson, seconded by Hanley, that the:bid of th'e, .Magee -Hale Park -O -Meter. Company be accepted. ' The' ;motion to accept the bid of the Magee -Hale Park�0 Meter Company was adopted. - On motion -of Byxbee and Drysdale, and by unanimous vote on roll call, the necessary funds to purchase up to 300 meters were transferred from the unappropriated reserve of the Parking Meter. Request of Bar Association for Census A.:l:etter was received from the Palo Alto Bar Associa- tion concerning the need for a branch county office building in the northern part;ofSanta Clara County and calling attention to &:ruling.of the>County Counsel that this area is entitled to a departmentof,:the Superior Court to be located in -the City of Palo Alto if the population of the City exceeds 35,000 persons. They submitted' a' resolution requesting the Council to take all necessary steps, dncluding the appropriation of sufficient funds in the budget for the next fiscal year, toward the taking of an officialcensus for the City of Palo Alto. Councilman Huston called attention to the need for com- pletion of'the:.Master Plan so that such problems involving future streets and park sites can be solved. Councilman Drysdale suggested that action on the tentative map of..this subdivision be`deferred until Mrs. Corcoran has had an opportunity to `,present her views to the Council. Control;: ex. .Report The 'monthly report of the Controller for February, 1954,, was was received and placed on file. Appointment to Matadero Mosquito Abatement Board The"Mayor...nominated Mr. J. B. Wells for re -appointment as Trustee'e the Matadero Mosquito Abatement District rearesen- ting Palo :Alto; fora two-year term commencing February 15, 1954. The nori`nation was confirmed, and the Mayor was requested to send a letter -to -Mr. Welis; expressing the Council's appreciation for his services to the`City,in this connection.. Board on 'Commercial Amusements At the suggestion of Councilman Huston, Committee No. 3 wa$ asked to review the city ordinances relative to the functions and powers" of the Board on Commercial Amusements. Senate Bill 2982, At the request.of the Mayor and on motion of Drysdale and'I3odgers,,the Council authorized the Mayor to send a telegram -to..Senator-Thomas Kuchel endorsing Bill 2982 and the Johnson Amendment::regarding Federal funds for construction of highways and;; the provision for -setting aside 5% of the total, amount of Fed:ral funds:forreimbursement for the costs of utilities in con- nection with :U.
