" • • ORIGINAL RESOLUTION NO. 4449 RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALO ALTO TRANSMITTING TO THE CONGRESS AND THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES THE RESULTS OF PROPOSITION A SUB- MITTED TO THE ELECTORS OF THE CITY OF PALO ALTO AT THE GENERAL MUNICIPAL ELECTION HELD MAY 11, 1971, ASSESSING THE ATTITUDE OF THE VOTING ELECTORATE OF PALO ALTO, CALIFORNIA REGARDING THE UNITED STATES' ROLE IN THE SOUTHEAST ASIAN CONFLICT WHEREAS, the Council of the City of Palo Alto, on its own ~otion, submitted to the electors at the 1971 general municipal election one proposition, designated Proposition A, to assess the attitude of the voting electorate of Palo Alto, California, regarding the United States' role in the Southeast Asian Conflict1 and WHEREAS, ~aid measure appeared on the ballot as follows: "PROPOSITION A: This measure is to assess the attitude of the voting electorate of Palo Alto, California, regarding the United States' role in ~he Southeast Asian Conf lictc It is understood that the results hereof will be transmitted to the Congress and the President of the United States, Vote for the statement more closely expressing your own personal viewo VOTE FOR ONLY ONE -A VOTE FOR BOTH WILL INVALIDATE YOUR VOTE ON THIS MEASURE l~ I am satisfied with the policies of the present adminis-YES tration in its handling of the withdrawal of the United States Armed Forces from the conflict in southeast Asia 2. I prefer a greatly accelerated program of withdrawal YES and request that the President and the Congress remove all United States Armed Forces from Southeast Asia by December 31, 1971." WHEREASr due and legal notice of said general municipal elec- tion was given as required by law1 and WHEREAS, on the 11th day of May, 1971, at the hour of 7:00 -1 - • • o'clock in the morning of said day the oolls were duly and regularly opened for said general municioal election in said city and said polls were continuously keot open for said our- Pose from the time they were so opened until 3:00 o'clock in the evening of said day; and ~·7EEPEAS, on '-lay 17, 1971, the Council of the City of Palo Alto met at their usual place of meeting and did then and there canvass the returns of said general municioal election and declare the results thereof. NOW, THEREFO~E. the Council of the City of Palo Alto does ~ESOLVE as follows: SECTION 1. The Council finds and declares that: (a) A general municipal election was duly and regularly held on May 11, 1971, in all things according to the Charter of the City of Palo Alto, Resolutions No. 4423 and No. 4440, and the election laws of the State of Califo~nia; (b) The total number of votes given and cast at said general municipal election upon Proposition A, including votes cast upon abseritee ballots, was 14. 213 , of which total number of votes given and cast fo~ Item 1, s.627 were satisfied with present policies and of which tr.e total number of votes given and cast for Item 2, 8,586 preferred a greatly accelerated program of withdrawal as set forth in said proposition. (c) Of the total number of votes given and cast at said general municipal election upon Proposition A, including votes cast upon absentee ballots, 39.59 percent were given and cast for Item l (satisfaction with present policies) and 60.40 percent were given and cast for Item 2 (preferring a greatly accelerated program of withdrawal). SECTION 2. This resolution setting forth said results of Proposition A are to be certified by the Mayor and City -2 - • • • . • • • Clerk and the City Clerk is hereby authorized and directed to submit a copy so certified to the Congress, through the majority leaders of the Senate and House of Representatives and to the President of the United States.
