RESOLUTION NO. 4448
RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALO ALTO
DECLARING THE RESULTS OF THE GENERAL MUNICIPAL
ELECTION HELD ON May 11, 1971
WHEREAS, on May 11, 1971, a general rnuni~ipal election was
duly held in the City of Palo Alto pursuant to the provisions of
Section 3 of Article III of the Charter of the City of Palo Alto
for the purpose of electing four councilrnen-ror full terms of
four years expiring June 30, 1975; and
WH.EREASi the Council of the City of Palo Alto, on its own
motion, submitted to the electors at the 1971 general municipal
election one proposition, designated Proposition A, to assess the
attitude of the voting electorate of Palo Alto, California, re-
garding the United States' role in the Southeast Asian Conflict1
and
WHEREAS, due and legal notice of said general municip~l
election was qiven as required by law1 and
WHEREASr on the 11th day of May, 1971, at the hour of 7:00
o'clock in the morning of sa;d day the polls were duly and regu-
larly opened for said general municipal elaction in said city and
said polls were continuously kept open for said purpose from the
time they were so opened until 8:00 o'clock in the evening of
said day; and
WHEREAS, on May 17, 1971, the Council of the City of Palo
Alto met at their usual place of meeting and did then and there
canvass the returns of said general municipal election and declare
the results thereof.
NOW, THEREFORE, the Council of the City of Palo Alto does
RESOLVE as follows:
SECTION lo The Council finds and declardS that:
(a) A general municipal election was duly and regularly

held on May 11, 1971, in all thinqs accordinq to the Charter of
the-city of Palo Alto, Resolutiona No. 4423 and No. 4440, and the
election laws of the State of California1
(b) The whole number of votea cast in the City at said
genera.\ municipal election, including votes cast upon absentee
ballots was 16,796
(c) -The total number of votes given and cast at said
general municipal election, including votes cast upon absentee
ballots, was as follows for the-candidates for City Council:

(d) The total number of votes given and cast at said general
municipal election upon Proposition A, including votes cast upon
absentee ballots~ was 14,213 , of which a total number of votes
given and cast for Item l, 5,627 were satisfied with present
policies and of the total number of votes given and cast for
Item 2, 8,586 preferred a greatly accelerated program, as set
forth in said proposition.
SECTION 2o Enid Pearson. ~lan Henderson, Richard Rosenbaum
and Frances Ko Diaa, beinq the four candidates receiving the
highest number of votea for the off ice of councilman for a full

four-year term, were duly and regularly elected for terms of
four years commencing .T'Jly 1, 1971 to serve as councilmen of
the City of Palo Alto~
SECTION 3o The qualified electors voting in said
general municipal election having cast their ballots for
Item 1 or 2 of Proposition A, the results shall be sub-
mitted to the Congress and the President of the United States
by-resolution.
SECTION 4. Attached hereto and incorporated herein as
EXHIBIT A is the statement of the result, as required by
Section 22933 of the Elections Code of the State of Cali-
fornia.
