RESOLUTION NO. 4599
RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALO ALTO
URGING THE STATE SENATE TO PASS LEGISLATION PROHIBITING
THE SALE OF FLAMMABLE CHILDREN'S CLOTHING
WHEREAS, more children under the age of five die from fire
and explosion than from any other injury; and
WHEREAS, flammable clothing is a substantial contributing
cause of injury and death to.children; and
WHEREAS, the United States Department of Commerce has set
regulations only for the prohibition of the sale of flammable
children's sleepwear up to size 6x; and
WHEREAS, approximately 83 percent of the garments involved
in children's burn cases are caused by shirts, trousers and
dresses ; and .
WHEREAS, children's clothing manufacturers have made little
progress in making non-flammable children's clothing available
to consumersJ
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the
City of Palo Alto vigorously urges the state sen~te to enact
Senate Bill 1011 which would prohibi,.t the: sale of all flammal:>le
children's clothing up to size 8 after January lt 1973.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that. the Clerk of the City of Palo
Alto transmit a copy of this resolution to State Senators Clark
L. Br~dley and Alfred E. Alquist, the Chairman Of the Senate

At its meeting of Hay 22, 1972 the Palo Alto City Council passed
the enclcx:ed Resolution No. 4599 which urges the State Senate
to enact Senate Bill 1011 which would prohibit the sale of all
fJamaabl~ children's clothing up to size 8 after January 1, 19-73.
