HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESO 4589'., .. • • ORIGINAL RESOLUTION NO. 4589 RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALO ALTO INDICATING ITS SUPPORT OF LEGISLATION CONCERNING THE USE OF THE POSTAL SERVICE FOR MAILING OF SAMPLES WHEREAS, the council of the City of Palo Alto has been made aware of the frequency that residents of the City have received through the United States mail unsolicited samples of products such as razor blades, bleach, laundry and cleaning products and medicine: and WHEREAS, the Council of the City of Palo Alto deplores the practice' of distributing potentially harmful products through the mail which could endanger the health, safety and welfare of the citizens of this community, particularly young children: and WHEREAS, the Council of the City of Palo Alto is aware that Federal legislation to restrict such mailings is currently pending: and NOW, THEREFORE, the Council of the City of Palo Alto does RESOLVE as follows: SEC?ION 1. On behalf of the citizens of this community the_ City Council actively supports House of Representative Bill No. 3499 to amend'title 39, United States Code, as enacte~ by the Postal Reorqanization Act, to prohibit the mailing of unsolicited samples of manufactured products and urqes·its passage. SECTION 2. The City Council, in the event HR. Bill No. 3499 is defeated, actively supports House of Representatives Bill No. 949 to amend title 39, United States Code, to prohibit the mailinq of unsolicited sample drug products and other potentially harmful-items and urges its passage. -1 - ·.\ ... • • SECTION 3. The City Clerk is hereby directed to forward a copy of this resolution to the Honorable Alan Cranston and John v. Tunney, United states Senators and to the Honorable Charles s.
