RESOLUTION NO. 4854
RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALO ALTO
COMMENDING DR. HANS MARK, MR. CHARLES HALL, AND
THE AMES RESEARCH CENTER TEAM ANO SUPPORT GROUPS
FOR PROJECT PIONEER
WHEREAS, the Pioneer 10 spacs craft was launched on
March 3, 1972; and
WHEREAS, on December 3, 1973, after t~aversing a half
billion miles 0£ cel_estial space, this highly sophisticated
space craft became the first ~an made object to reach the
planet ~upiter; and
WHEREAS, Pioneer 10 will contir.ue its journey reaching
the orbit of the planet Uranus in 1979 and Pluto in 1986;
and
WHEREAS, Pioneer 10 is the first man made object to
escape the solar system, the_ first to go beyond the orbit
of Mars, and the first satellite to use a nuclear }:>OWer
source; and
WHEREAS, the voyag~ of Pioneer 10 has opened exciting
new frontiers in man's ·search for knowledge of our own planet
and its originsr and
WHEREAS, this scientific feat of great magnitude has
been accomplished by a highly dedicated and skilled team of
personnel of NASA's Ame9 Reasearch Center in Mountain View,
California, led by ·the Director of Ames, Dr. Hans Mark and
the Project Manager, Mr. Charles Hall; and
WHEREAS, the spacecraft was built by TRW Systems of
Redondo Beach, Ca11fornia; the Bendix corporation provided
operations support; the tracking and data acquisition systems
were developed by the Jet Propulsion Laboratc.ry, Pasadena,
California1 the communicat.ion wave tube was provided by
Watkins-Johnson, Palo Alto, Cilifornia1 and the Atomic Energy
Commission developed the nuclear power source;
NOW, THEREFORE, the Council of the City of Palo Alto
does RESOLVE as follows:
SECTION 1. The Council of t.he City of Palo Alto hereby
applauds and cornm&,ds Dr. Hans Mark, Mr. Cl'!arles Ball and
their Arc.es Research Center team and support groups and
organizations for their outstanding effort and success with
Project Pioneer.

SECTION 2. The City Clerk of the City of Palo Alto
hereby Is authOrized and directed to send copies vf this
resolution to Richa.rdM~ Nixon, President of the united
States; RC>nald Reagan.., Govern~r of the State of California;
United Sta~es Senators Alan Cran3ton and John v. TUnney;
United States Congressmen Paul N. Mccloskey, Charles s. Gubser,
and Oon Edwards; Mayor Carl E. Anderson of Mountain View; the
City Council of the city of Mountain View; Dr~ James Fletcher,
Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space Administra~·
tion; Dr. Hans Mark, Director of Alhes Research Center; or. Dixie
Lee Ray, Chairman of the Atomic En6rqy Commission; and the
Chief Executi1e Officers of TRW Systems; the Bendix Corporation;
the Jet Propulsion La~~atory, and Watkins-Johnson.
