RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL _OF THE CITY OF PALO AI.TO
REQUESTING THE STATE LEGISLATURE TO REPEAL THE
PROVISIONS OF STATE LAW PROHIBITING PACKAGE SALES
OF ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES WITHIN 1.5 MILES OF STANFORD
UNIVERSITY
WHEREAS, falifornia law· and court decisions now allow sale
of all types of al~~holic beverages in all parts of Palo Alto,
except package·:stores within 1. 5 miles of the Leland Stanford
Junior University campus; and
WHEREAS, the one and one-half mile general prohibition on
sales of alcoholic beverages near universlty campuses has been
repealed by the California State Legislature for all parts of
the State, effective January l, 1979; and
WHEREAS, there is little need or justification for said
restriction to continue for an additional period of more than
five years as applied ~o the area near the campus of Leland
Stanfo1:d Junior University;
NOW, THEREPORE, the Council of the City of Palo Alto does
RESOLVE as fol lo\ ::3:
SECTION l. The Council urges the Legislature of the State of
California tc amend Section 172m of the Penal Code of the State
of California to remove the prohibition from the law upon package
sales of alcoholic bev~r.,,ges within 1. 5 miles of the campus of
Leland Stanford Junior University at the earliest possible
time •
. ~ECTION 2. The Council hereby directs the City Clerk to
forward copies of this resolution to Senators Clark Bradley and
Arlen Gregorio, Assemblymen Dixon Arnett and Richard Hayden,
the Board of Supervisor.a of Santa Clara County, the City Council
