HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESO 4836• OR:GINAL RESOL'JTION NO. 4836 RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALO ALTO OPPOSING MEASURE A, COlJNTY SPORTS ARENA INCREASED MAXIMUM TAX RATE PROPOSAL ON THE NOVEMBER 6, 1973 BALLOT WHEREAS, the proposed Santa Clara County· Sports Arena_ProjP-r:t.-- received electorate approval in November, 197?; and- WHEREAS, +-he adequacy of the financing proposed for the Pro- ject was soon thereafter challenged by many concerned county residents; and WHEREAS, the Board of Supervisors of ~anta Clara County recognized the inadequacy of the proposed financ..;i..1g and wisely decided to resubmit the financing problem to the electorate; and WHEREAS., Measure Ao~ the November 6 ballot now p=oposes a considerable increase in the maximum tax rate for funding the Sports Arena; and WHEREAS, the overall benefit of the Sports Arena to the cit~ze~s of ~he County is dubious because the Project would pri- marily benefit a few sports ?romoters and~ therefore, the use of County money for the Pro)ect s construction appears to constitute an inappropriate and unnecessary expenditure of public funds1 and WHEREAS, sports stadia in general are extremely expensive and financially unrewarding to the public and a consulting firm studying this particular Sports Arena proposal has determined that tho Project promises little or no return to the county (and its taxpayers) either directly from operating revenues or indirectly from savings in the cost of existing County services; and ·- WHEREAS, although the· proposed tax increase is fixed, there is no limit on the amount of money that can be expended for construction and operation of the Arena; and WHEREAS, if construction costs continue to escalate or operating revenues do not meet expectations as often happens with such Projects, the additional raoney will have to ba diverted from· more important public programs;· - NOW, THEREFORE, the Council of the City of Palo Alto does RESOLVE that the council of the City of Palo Alto hereby oppos~s Measure A, the increased tax rate proposal for the proposed Santa Clara County Sports Arena.
