HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESO 4761• • O n~~INAL "'•J RESOLUTION NO. 4761 RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALO ALTO OPPOSING LEGISLATIVE REAPPORTIONMENT PLANS WHICH WOULD PLACE SECTIONS OF THE CITY OF PALO ALTO INTO DIFFERENT STATE SENATORIAL AND ASSEMBLY DISTRICTS AND SUPPORTING THE INCLUSION OF THE CITY OF PALO ALTO IN GEOGRAPHICALLY COMPAcr DISTRIC~S WITH NEIGHBORING MIDPENINSULA COMMUNITIES WHEREAS, the Senate and the Assembly of the State of Cali- fornia are charged with the responsibility of reapportioning the State Senatorial and AJsembly districts in the near future: and WHEREAS, under several of the reapportionment plans which have been proposed, the City of Palo Alto would be divided and sections of the City would be placed into different State Sena- torial and Assembly districts; and WHEREAS, under said reapportionment plans, the City of Palo Alto not only would be divided for purposes of legislative repre- sentation but also would be in the same districts as far distant communities having economic, social, and envi~onmental interests which differ significantly from those shared by the City of Palo Alto and its neighboring Midpeninsula communities; WHEREAS, it is in the best interests of the citizens of the Midpeninsula area as well as the citizens of the City of Palo Alto that the City of Palo Alto not be so divided and that the City of Palo Alto be included in geographically compact State Senatorial and Assembly districts with its neighboring Midpeninsula communities; ·-------------~ NOW, THE~~FORE, the Council of the City of Palo Alto does RESOLVE as follows: SECTION 1. The Senate and Assembly of the State of Cali- fornia hereby are urged not to enact, and the Governor of the State of California hereby is urgeq not to approve, any legislative reapportionment plan which would divide the City ot' P·alo Alto and would place sections of the City of Palo Alto into different State Senatorial or Assembly districts • ... 1 - .. • • SECTION 2. The Senate and Assembly of the State of Cali- fornia are further urged to enact, and the Governor of the State of California hereby is urqed to approve, a legislative reapportion- ment plan would would include the City of Palo Alto in qeoqraphically compact state Senatorial and Assembly districts with its neighbor- ing Midpeninsula communities. SECTION 3. The City Clerk hereby is directed to transmit a certified copy of this resolution to Governor Ronald Reagan, James R. Mi!ls, President Pro Tern of the Stace Senate; Robert Moretti, Speaker of the Assembly: Jack R. Fenton, Majority Leader of the Assembly; Robert Monagan, Minority Leader of the Assembly; State Senator Clark L. Bradley; State Senator Alfred Alquist; Assembl~an Richard Hayden; Assemblyman John Vasconcellos; Mervyn Dymally, Chair- man of the Se~ate Elections and Reapportionment Committee; Henry A. Waxman, Chairman of the Assembly Elections and Reapportionment Committee; and Richard Carpenter, Executive Director and Legal Counsel of the League of California Cities.
