HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESO 4726• • • ORIGINAL \ RESOLUTION NO. 47Z6 ?.ESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALO ALTO URGING SUPPORT OF S.B. 121 INCREASING FUNDING FOR AND REVISING THE OPERATION OF THE CALIFORNIA ARTS COMMISSION WHEREAS, the City of Palo Alto has always enjoyed a high level of activity in the p~ivate and public sectors concerning all aspects of artistic and cultural life; and WHEREAS, the City of Palo Alto has been extremely sensitive to the artistic and cultural needs of the community; and WHEREAS, the cultural and arts programs of the City of Palo Alto have been of the highest degree of excellence and broadly based; and WHEREAS, the California Arts Canmission b~s historically been underfunded and underactive in its su9port of programs and projects for the promtion or support of the arts; and WHEREAS, the City of Palo Alto funds mor~ for the support and promotion of arts than does the Californi~ Arts Commission for the entire State of Californiai and WHEREAS, S.B. 121 has been introduced by Senator Arlen Gregorio in tha California Senate; and WHEREAS, S.B. 121 provides for an approximately Seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars ($750,000) increase in f\.lil~ing ·- for the Californic Arts Commission; and WHEREAS, s. B. 121 provides for the funding of community arts progrP\B on a mC\tchinq basis from t.he private and :t>ublic sectors1 and WHEREAS, such match!~~ fund approach stimulates the private and public sectors to increase a9tivity in the support and promotion of the arts:-.snd WHEREAS •. the residents of t.:1~ City of Pal~ Alto as well as the residents of the State of California evidence a high level of interest in cultu~al and artistic activites which in tern -l - • • • raises the quality of life for all residents of the State of California: NOW, THEREFORE, the Council of the City of Palo Alto does RESOLVE as follows: SECTION 1. The Council of the City of Paln Alto hereby vigorously ~upports the passage of S.B. 121 increasin~ the appropriation of funds for the California Arts Commission and establishing matching funds appropriations to oublic or private institutions and urges all residents of the st~te of California to support such legislation. SECTION 2. The City Clerk is hereby directed to forwd.rd a certified copy of this resolution to Senator Arlen Gregorio, Senator Clark Bradley, the majority leader of the Senate, the minori'.y leader of the Senate, the President Pro Tern of the denate, the Senate Appropriations Committee and the Senate Fiscal Conunittee.
