RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALO ALTO
COMMEMORATING THE DEDICATION OF THE ASTRONOMICAL
OBSERVATORY, OAXACA DE JUAREZ, MEXICO
WHEREAS, the -Municipality of Oaxaca de Juarez, Mexico, and the City of Palo
Alto, California, United States of America, have bl~en joined together in international bonds
C?f friendship and cultual exchange as Sister Citi~s for approximately nine years; and
WHEREAS, Oaxaca and Palo Alto have extended and strengthened these bonds of
friendship and cultural exchange in numerous ways throughout the years; and
WHEREAS, Oaxaca and Palo Alto in June, 1972, ·~'Jnnulated an agreement with
NEIGHBORS ABROAD of Palo Alto and the Comite' del Ciudades Hennanas of Oaxaca
for assistance in the construction :ind equipping of a modern astronomical observatory
on the hill of Fortin which overlooks Oaxaca; and
WHEREAS, this admirable project has been completed and the accomplishment of.
this goal is . .the result of the mutual sharing of efforts and talents by very good friends;
and
WHEREAS, the observatory will be d'Xlicated in February and will serve as a fine
educational institution for all people; an~
WHEREAS, the City of Palo Alto wishes to commemorate the dedication of this
observatory and honor the lOOth anniversary of the death of that great Oaxaca patriot,
Benito Juarez,· in whose recognition this observatory bas been constructed;
NOW, nmREFORE, tbe Council of the City of Palo Alto does RESOLVE as follows:
SECI'ION 1. The Council of the City of Palo Alto hereb}' applauds and
commemorates the completion and dedication of the astronomical observatory at Oaxaca
de Juarez, Mexico.
SECTION 2. The Council of the City of Palo Alto hereby expresses to the citizens
of Oaxaca the great feelint of satisfaction felt by Palo JJtans in having had the privilege
of contributing to the -accomplishment of this magnificent goal.
SECTION 3. The City Oak of the Oty of Palo Alto is hereby authorized and
directed to send copies of this resolution to the ~nici.pal Council of Oaxaca, in care
of the Honorable Jorae Martinez Gracida, Municipal President of Oaxaca de Juarez, Mexico, '
