RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALO ALTO,
CALIFORNIA, RELATIVE TO THE FREEDOM MARCH TO
BE HELD ON AUGUST 28, 1963

WHEREAS, on Wed nesday, August 28, 1963, in
Washington, D. C., the re will be held an historic
Free dom Mar ch by th ousands of our fellow citizens
fr om all pa rts of the county and fr omell w alks of
life; a nd
WHEREAS„ the purpose and aim of this . Freed om
March is to demonstra te and protest p eacef ully the
fa ct that ra cial bar riers ex ist which still effectively

ba r some Asaerica n citizen s fro m enjoying the st atus du e
theca, as stated in our Declaration of Independence,
that "all men are created equal."
NOW, THEREFORE, the Co uncil of the City of Palo
Alto does RESOLVE as follo ws:
•
1. That the City Council of the City of Pa lo
Alto ex presse s its sympathy an d suppo rt for the purpose
and aim of such a peace ful demonstratio n and protest.
2. That the City Co uncil of than City of Pa lo
Alto pledges its efforts to re moving such racia l barriers
previou sly alluded to as they may e xist within its
jur isdictio n by whatever means that a re pra ctical and
a ppro priate to lo cal governme nt.
