HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESO 241458 !!SOL!!!ON N 0 • --21414 - VHIREAS, there is an alarminl shortage or hospital beda available in Cal1rorn1a for California veterans provided by the Veterans Ad•iniatration, and the nuaber haa been 4•crease4 by 2,000 beds a1noe June, 1950; and WH.ERE.AS, 'there are approx1utely 4,600 veterans in Cal1- torn1a state •ntal 1nst1tut1ona of which approxiutely 1,500 have aerv1ee-connected disabilities entitling them to hospitali- zation and care by the Veterans Ad•1nistration; and WHEREAS, in October ot 1946 the Pederal Govern .. nt approved the building ot a 1,000-bed neuropsychiatric hospital in San Prancisco, which hoopital has never be«n built due to the failure or the Federal Government to appropriate runda to build this hospital; and WHEREAS, a 200-bod general, .ad1cal and aurigical hospital in San Diego waa approved but hal never been built due to the failure or the Pederal Govern.ent to appropriate the necessary funds therefor; and WHBREAS 1 the standard or medical care for California veterans in the existing hospitals has been adversely affected by reductions in the budget of the Veterans Administration; and WHEREAS, it 1s a well known fact that hundreds or thousands or veterans have been migrating to the State of California from every state ot the Union aince tho clo1e or World War l and the veteran population or California will continue to increase by reason or the Korean e .. rgency~ and for that reason applications by veterans for hospitalization have shown a steady in~reaae; and WHEREAS, the Veterans Administration has not only caused a outback 1n the number or operating bede, but it baa alao reduced the standard or medical care, the amount or out-patient treatment for veterans, the amount or medical research, and a shortage in the medical supplies 1n these veterans hospitals; NOW 1 TH.imli:FORE, BE IT RESOLVKD by the City Council that the City of Palo Alto, State of California, respectfully memorialize the Congress or the United States to enact legislation and to appropriate =oneya necessary to bring the Veterkns Adain1atrat1on Hospital Program to the needed standards to meet the needs or the veteran population of California; and BB IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the City Clerk be directed to transmit copies or this resolution to the two u. S. Senators fro• California and to the congressional representative or thia d1atr1ct. The above and foregoing resolution was duly and regularly introduced and paesed at a regular meeting or the Council or the City or Palo Alto, California, held on the 9th day or March, 1953, by the following vote: AYES: NOIS: Bishop, Blois, Caahel, Drysdale, Hill, Huato:a, Jackson, Marshall, Miller, Mitchell, Montrouil, Porter, Sicpaon,Wella.
