RESOLUTION NO. 5H43
RESOLUTION Of THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY Of PALO ALTO
RECOGNIZING AND SUPPORTING THE EFFORTS OF THE STUDENT
ORGANIZATION FOR SOMALIA REFUGEES
WHE~EAS, a situation of grave importance exists today throughout East
Africa where twenty mi 11 ion people are 1n danger of starvation; and
' WHEREAS, in Somalia alone, a country of 3.4 million people. where
nearly a million people (90% of whom are women and children) are in refugee
camps, thousands die each week; and
WHEREAS, a group of Palo Alto High School students have fonned SOS/
Refugees (Student Organization for Somalia Refugees) ~nd have developed a
year 1s project to increase conrnunity awareness of the present crisis in
Somalia and to bring direct aid to the refugees; and
WHEREAS, the City of Palo Alto recognizes its responsibility as a
World City; and
WHEREAS, the Mayor of Palo Alto has proclaimed October 24, 1980 as
UN DAY in honor of the 35th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations,
a primary purpose of which is to cooperate internationally in solving economic7
cultural and humanitarian problems and in promoting respect for human rights
and fundamental freedoms;
NOW, THEREFORE, the Council of the City of Palo Alto does RESOLVE as
follows:
SECTION l. The City Council praises the efforts and endorses the
goalsOTt'heStuder.t Organization for Somalia Refu·gees.
SECTIO~ 2. The City Counc i1 urges the cOOITlunity to become more aware
of and informed about this emergency situation in East Africa.
SECTION 3,. The City Council calls upon all segments of the Palo Alto
community to support and take part in the endeavors of these young people
to alleviate the hunger, pain, and suffering present in Somalia and through-
out the Horn of Africa.
