RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALO ALTO
SUBMITTING TO THE ELECTORATE OF T~E CITY OF PALO
ALTO AT A SPECIAL ELECTION TO BE HELD JUNE 8, 1976
PROPOSED AMENDMENTS TO THE CHARTER OF THE CITY OF
PALO ALTO TO CHANGE THE DATES OF OFFICE OF MEMBERS
OF THE BOARD OF EDUCATlON AND CHANGE THE LENGTH OF
RESIDENCY REQUIRED OF CANDIDATES FOR THE CITY COUNCIL,
AND REQUESTING THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS TO CONSOLIDA~E
SAID ELECTION WITH THE DIRECT PRIMARY ELECTION TO BE
HELD JUNE 8, 1976
WHEREAS, the City Council, as provided in Section 3 of
Article XI of the Constitution of the State of California desires
to submit to the electors at the 1976 Direct"" Primary Election
a proposal for amendments to the Charter of the City of Palo Alto;
NOW, THEREFORE, the Council of the City of Palo Alto does
RESOLVE as follows:
SECTION 1. That the following measure shall be submitted to
the eiectors of the City of Palo Alto at a special election to be
held June 8, 1976, to be designated as City of Palo Alto measure
CITY OF PALO ALTO MEASURE ---
Shall the Charter of the City of Palo Alto be
amended to provide that the terms of members of
the Board of Education of the Palo Alto Unified
School District shall commence on April first
following their election and shall terminate on
March thirty-first five years thereafter?
FOR THE AMENDMENT
AGAINST THE AMENDMENT ------
SECTION 2. If a majority of the qualified voters voting at said
election shal! vote in favor of CITY OF PALO ALTO MEASURE
it shall be deemed ratified. and Section 2(c) of Article v~r=r~I--A....--o-f
the Charter of the City of Palo Alto shall, upon filing with the
Secretary of State, be amended to read as follows:
"(c) Term of office. The term of office of the
members of the Board of Education. except as
provided in Section 2, subsection (b}, of this
Article. shall be five years from and after the
first day of April succeeding their election
and until their successors are elected and
qualified.
The term of office for each member of the
Board of-Education on July 1, 1976 shall expire
on March 31 of the fifth year after the election
of such member."
SECTION 3. The following measure shall be submitted
to the electors of the City of Palo Alto at the special election
to be held June 8, 1976, to be designated City of Palo Alto Measure

CITY OF PALO ALTO MEASURE
Shall the Charter of the City of Palo Alto be
amended to provide that members of the City
Council shall have been a resident of the City
of Palo Alto for at least thirty days prior to
the final filing date for nomination papers for such
office. and to remove obsole~e language? ·

SECTION 4. If a majority of the qualified voters voting
at sald election shall vote in favor of CITY OF PALO ALTO MEASURE
it shall be deemed ratified and Section 2 of Article III
of the enarter of the City of Palo Alto shall, upon filing with the
Sacretary of State, be amended to read as follows:
"Sec. 2. Number; term. The Council of the
City of Palo Alto shall be composed of nine
members, each of whom shall at the time
of assuming such office be an elector and
shall have been a resident of the City of
Palo Alto for at least thirty days nP.xt
preceding the final filing date for nomination
papers for such office. The members of said
council shall be known as councilmen, council-
women, or council members and their terms of
office shall be four years. commencing on the
first day of July next succeeding their election."
SECTION 5. The City Clerk hereby is directed to cause said
proposed charter amendments to be published once in the PALO ALTO
TIMES, a newspaper of general circulation within the City of Palo
Alto~ and all editions thereof during the day of publication, said
adve~tising in said newspaper to be completed not less than forty (40)
nor more than sixty (60) days prior to the date fixed for said election;
Said City Clerk hereby also is directed to cause copies of said
charter amendments to be printed in convenient pamphlet form a.nd
in type of not less than 10 point and to cause copies thereof to be
mailed to each of the qualified electors of the City of Palo Alto;
And c;aid City Clerk also shall publish all such other notices
and do all such other things as may be required to submit such
measures to said electors at said election.
SECTION 6. The Board of Supervisors of the County of Santa
Clara hereby is requested to orde·.1..· the consolidation .of said election
with the direct primary election to be held on June 8, 1976, and to
authorize the Registrar of Voters of Santa Clara Cotmty to provide
necessary services relating to the election.
