HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESO 5187I I RESOLUTION NO. 5187 RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALO ALTO SUPPORTING MARSH RESTORATION AND PRESERVATION IN THE BA'lLANDS WHEREAS, the City of Palo Alto and the u. s. Army Corps of Engineers have agreed on the controlled introduction of tidal waters into the Palo Alto Flood Basin as an acceptable mitigation project in consideration for the Corps of Engineers granting the City a permit to dispose of solid wastes at a sanitary landfill siter and WHEREAS, the City of Palo Alto has appropriated $110,000 to restore controlled tidal action to the lagoon; and WHEREAS, the City of Palo Alto has ex~ended $40,000 to con• duct a mathematical feasibility study on the Flood Basin; and WHEREAS, the City of Palo Alto has appropriated $75,000 to restore marsh environments and preserve habitat diversity in the Flood Basin; and WHEREAS, the City of· Palo Alto's Department of Nature and Science is cooperating with Stanford University to develop, and disseminate the results of,·research on the physical and bio- logical aspects of salt marshes1 and WHEREAS, the City of Palo Alto is developing marshland management plans in ah urban area: NOW, THEREFORE, the Council of the City of Palo Alto does RESOLVE' as follows: SECTION 1. The Council recognizes th& importance of its marshlands and resolves that they be preserved for present and future benefits. SECTION 2. 'l'he Council r·eco9'nizes the importance of dis- eeminatinq reaeareh knowledqe in order to improve environmental quality. • f , • SECTION J.
