RESOLUTION NO. 5751
RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALO Al.TO
SUPPORTING THE REQUEST OF THE NATIONAL ORGANIZATION
OF WOMEN REGARDING TliE EQUAL RIGHTS AMENDMENT
WHEREAS, the people of the State of California have spoken in
favor of the Equal Rights Amendment, but are being denied the bene-
fits of it because ratification by three more states is still needed
to obtain the 38 states required for passage; and
WHEREAS, the Palo Alto City Council desires to pressure legis-
latures of those states which have not yet ratified the Equal Rights
Amendment; and
WHEREAS, many of the states which have failed to ratify the
Equal Rights Amendment host a significant number of conventions,
annual meetings and conferences, and like assemblages elf interest
to the City of Palo Alto; and
WHEREAS, a reduction in the attendance of persons at these
conventions, annual meetings and conferences, and like assemblages
will result in a loss of revenue to the states which have not ratified
the Equal Rights Amendment;
NOW, THEREFORE, the Council of the City of Palo Alto does
RESOLVE as follows:
SECTION 1. That no City of Palo Alto money shall be spent on
out-oX-state travel. food, accommodation expenses of Palo Alto
government employees or officials who attend conventions, annual
meetinga and conferences, and all such assemblages in states which
have not ratified the Equal Rights .Amendment.
SECTION 2. That in every instance wherein this resvlution
applies, the organization calling the meeting shall be so notified
by the City Managerof the City of Palo Alto and a copy of the letter
shall be forwarded to the governor of the state involved.
