RESOLUTION NO. 5601
RESOLU'l'IOU OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALO.ALTO
URGING PARTICIPATION IN TH£ OBSERVAUCE OF WORLD
DISA..lUiA?tENT WEEK
WHEREAS, the United National General Assembly, in its Special
Session on Disarrnarrient held Uay 23 through July 1, 1978, adopted
a final document which urged observance of World Dfsarr:iame.nt Week,
October 24 through October 31, .. devoted to fostering the object:i.ves
of disarmament"; and
WHEREAS, ending the arms race is l!lankind1 s most urgent need;
and
WHEREAS, the adoption of Proposition 13 in California on June
6 reflected public opposition to high taxes, but was not directed
at the federal government which collects the largest portion of
total taxes and is the level of government which provides the
greatest opportunities for constructive savings in governmental
expenditurEs and for reduction of taxes; . ·
NOW, THEREFORE, the Council of the City of Palo Alto does
RESOLVE as follows:
SECTION 1. . That World Disarmament Week hereby is procla:i.med
for the period of October 24 through October 31~ 1978. Organiza-
tions and citizens of the City of Palo Alto are urged to partici-
pate in meetings and events during World Disarmanent Week that
will focus public attention on the urgent need for world-wide
disarmament, and to conduct educational activities for disarmament
during the ensuing year. · ·
SECTION 2. The President and Congress of the United States
are urged to work most diligently for multilateral step-by-step
world-wide disarmament as the safest road to military security
for the United States and world peace.
