RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY· OF P~O ALTO
OPPOSING SOUTHERN PACIFIC'S PETITION TO THE INTERSTATE
COMMERCE COMMISSION FOR DISCONTINUANCE CF ITS PASSENGER
TRAIN SERVICE BETWEEN SAN JOSE AND SAN FRANCISCO
WHEREAS. Sout:hern Paci£ic pao&i6u&-Gi:" train. ::or':!ce repre9ents
an essential mode of cOUIDUter-type public tran&portation along the
San Francisco peninsula; and
WBEREAS. che proposed discontinuance of Southern Pacific
cOJJDUter train· ·service between San Jose and San Francisco ~9111 not
be supplanted by a ccmparable alternative mode of public trans-
portation; and
WBEREAS, the City of Palo Alto bas already suffered a diminu-
tion iL its level of public transportation, particular!~ peninsula-
long commuter service. as the result of Greyhound Inc. 's discon-
tinuance of its ?en1nsula-long bus service; and
WBEREAS, the propo&ed discontinu.uice of Southern Pacific
CODID.Uter service will inevitably require formez Southern Pacific
c~ters to rely on private means of transportation and thus will
adversely affect the City of Palo Altc and the Bay Area by in-
creasing traffic on already overcrowded streets and highways. by
increasing air·pollution in a region sufferihg from excessive air
pollution, and by increa~ing energy consumption in a time of ·
nati~nal energy conserva:tion;
NOW, THEREFORE, the Council of che City of Palo Alto does
RESOLVE as follows: ..

SECTION l. The City of Palo Alto •crongly opposes the petition
of Southern Pa~ific to the Interstate Commerce Commissian for dis-
continuance of its passenger tra.in service be'tWeen San .Jose and San .
Francisco. ·
SECTION 2. The Council of the City of Palo Alto finds that
this ls not a project as defpied in Secti~ ll,04.130 of the Palo
Alto Municipal Code and, therefore. no environmental 1_111pact assess-
ment is nee:z&-.ary.
