RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALO ALTO
HONORING THE CITY OF SAN.JOSE UPOU THE OCCASlOH OF
ITS TWO HUNDREt d ANNl~ERSAR\
WHERE4~i the City of San Jose had ite begi~..ning on Ncve~ber
29, 1777, when Lt. Jose Joaquin Mo~aga led aoldiers and farwers
-· and their families to a site on the Rio Guadalupe across from
Mission Santa Clara de Asis; and
WHEREAS, this group of 66 carefully selected soldiers and
farmers established El Pueblo de San Jose de Guadaluf1e, the first
civil settlement in California, for the purpose of growing grain
and foodstuffs for Spain's religious and military outposts; and
WHEREAS, upon statehood and the transition from pueblo to
city, San Jose became the ~irst capitol of the new State of
California; and
WHEREAS, from the first small settlement, San Jose, rich in
heritage, has grown to a community of 600,000, the fourth largest city in California;
NOW, THEREFORE, the Council of the City o~ Palo Alto does
RESOLVE as follows:
SECTION 1. The Council of the City of Palo Alto congratulates
the Cfty of S&l Jose upon its 200th anniversary and expresses its
desire and hope for continuing friendship and cooperation in the
spirit of good_ neighbors. . ,
