HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESO 3997• • RESOLUTION NO. 3997 RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALO ALTO DECLARING THE RESULTS OF THE CONSOLIDATED GENERAL MUNICIPAL ELECTION HELD ON MAY 9, 1967 ,s1 • WHEREAS, on May 9, 1967, a general municipal election was duly held in the City of Palo Alto pursuant to the provisions of Section 3 of Article III of the Charter of the City of Palo Alto for the purpose of electing three Councilmen for a full term of four years expiring June 30, 1971, and WHEREAS, pursuant to Resolution No. 3961 of the Council of the City of Palo Alto adopted February 20, 1967, a special election was held and consolidated with said general municipal election for the purpose of voting upon three propositions, designated as Propositions 1, 2 and 3 respectively, amending Section 1, Section 2 and Section 3 of Article VI of the Charter of the City of Palo Alto relative to the use of the recall, the initiative and the refer- endum, and WHEREAS, pursuant to Resolution No. 3963 of the Council of the City of Palo Alto adopted February 27, 1967, a special election was held and consolidated with said general municipal election for the purpose of voting upon a proposition, designated as Proposition 4, amending Section 3 of Article VII of the Charter of the City of Palo Alto deleting certain filing and petition requirements of candidates for City Council, and WHEREAS, pursuant to Resolution No. 3967 of the Council of the City of Palo Alto adopted March 13, 1967, a special election was held and consolidated with said general municipal election for the purpose of voting on the question of discontinuance of the use of certain lands as a public park, said question designated as Proposition 5, and WHEREAS, due and legal notice of said consolidated general municipal election was given as required by law, and WHEREAS, on the 9th day of May 1967 at the hour of 7:00 o'clock in the morning of said day the polls were duly and regularly • • opened for said consolidated general municipal election in said city and said polls were continuously kept open for said purpose from the time they were so opened until 7:00 o'clock in the even- ing of said day, and WHEREAS, on May 15, 1967, the Council of the City of Palo Alto met at their usual place of meeting and did then and there canvass the returns of said consolidated general municipal election and declare the results thereof, NOW, THEREFORE, the Council of tLe City of Palo Alto does RESOLVE as follows: SECTION 1. The Council finds and declares that: (a) A consolidated general municipal election was duly and regularly held on May 9, 1967 in all things according to the Charter of the City of Palo Alto, Resolutions No. 3961, No. 3963 and No. 3967, and the election laws of the State of California. (b) The whole number of votes cast in the City at said consolidated general municipal election, including votes cast upon absentee ballots was 14,889 (c) The total number of votes given and cast at said consolidated general municipal election, including votes cast upon absentee ballots, was as follows for the candidates for City Council: EDWARD ARNOLD 9,239 ROBERT J. DEBS 5.292 PRANCES J. DIAS 9,109 MARTIN GORF`INKEL 1,402 BURTON MARKS 4,373 C. GRANT SPAETH ARTHUR A. SPAR 4,607 J. DARIUS VENOM 1 9 NEWMAN 1 WM. J. DUNSMOR* 1 8,758 (d) The total number of votes given and cast at said consolidated general municipal election upon Proposition 1, - 2 - • • including votes cast upon absentee ballots, was 13,623 of which total number of votes given and cast 4,782 were in favor of said proposition and 8,841 were against said proposition; (e) The total number of votes given and cast at said consolidated general municipal election upon Proposition 2, including votes cast upon absentee ballots, was 13,264 of which total number of votes given and cast 31259 were in favor of said proposition and 10,005 were against said proposition; (f) The total number of votes given and cast at said consolidated general municipal election upon Proposition 3, including votes cast upon absentee ballots, was 13,292 , of which total number of votes given and cast 3,358 were in favor of said proposition and 9,834 were against said proposition; (g) The total number of votes given and cast at said consolidated general municipal election upon Proposition 4, including votes cast upon absentee ballots, was 13,206 of which total number of votes given and cast 10,825 were in favor of said proposition and 2,381 were against said proposition; (h) The total number of votes given and cast at said consolidated general municipal election upon Proposition 5, including votes cast upon absentee ballots, was 13.680 of which total number of votes given and cast 7n -A were in favor of said proposition and 1,977 were against said proposition, SECTION 2. Edward Arnold, Frances J. Dias and C. Grant Spaeth, being the three candidates receiving the highest number of votes for the office of Councilman for a full four-year term, were duly and regularly elected for a term of four years commencing July 1, 1967 to serve as Councilmen of the City of Palo Alto. SECTION 3. SECTION 4. A. majority of the qualified electors vot.iLq is said consolidated general municipal election havixlq cast tht_`ir ballots against saki Propositions 1, 2 and 3 amending the Charter of the City of Palo Alto, said amendments are hereby declared defeated. SECTION 5. The City Attorney is hereby authorized and dir- ected to prepare a resolution setting forth said charter amendment so ratified to be certified by the Mayor and City Clerk for intro- duction and passage as a Concurrent Resolution by the Legislature of the State of California approving said amendment. SECTION 6. A majority of the qualified electors voting in said consolidated general municipal election having cast their ballots in favor of said Proposition 5 discontinuing and abandoning the use of certain lands as a public park, said proposition shall be deemed ratified and passed, and use of the land for park pur- poses as described in Resolution No. 3957 of the Council of the City of Palo Alto shall be forthwith discontinued and the Council hereby authorizes and directs the City Attorney to prepare an ordinance pursuant to Article VIII of the Charter to cover re- version of ownership to the City in fee. SECTION 7. Attached hereto in conformity with the require- ments of section 22933 of the Elections Code are EXHIBITS 1 through 37 showing the number of votes cast at each precinct and by absentee ballot, and said exhibits are incorporated herein 4 dm • by reference.
