HomeMy WebLinkAboutRESO 3990• RESOLUTION NO. 3990 RESOLUTION OF THE COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF PALO ALTO COMMEMORATING THE 73RD ANNIVERSARY OF THE INCORPORATION OF THE CITY OF PALO ALTO efl!'"1, WHEREAS, April 16, 1967 marked the 73rd anniversary of the incorporation of the City of Palo Alto on April 16, 1894; and WHEREAS, in the intervening 73 years Palo Alto has grown from a city of 730 people governed by an elected Board of Trustees to a city of more than 56,000 people operated under a Council -Manager form of government; and WHEREAS, Palo Alto is unique in the multitude of services it offers its citizens, especially its ownership of utility operations - - water, gas, sewer, electricity and refuse disposal, and ownership of its own Animal Shelter and its partnership with Stanford University in the ownership and operation of a major hospital; and WHEREAS, Palo Alto has a highly efficient Police Depart- ment with an exceptional record for public safety and crime prevention, and an equally fine Fire Department with notable records for both fire suppression and fire prevention; and WHEREAS, Palo Alto has one of the leading municipal recreation departments in all the nation, combining both neighborhood parks with such outstanding amenities as our great Foothills Park, our municipal golf course, our Yacht Harbor, our Airport, our Community Theatre, our Chil6ren's Theatre and our Junior Museum; and WHEREAS, Palo Alto has a library system acknowledged as one of the finest in the country, including its Main Library and the College Terrace, Downtown and Mitchell Park branches 1 with special citations for the unique Children's Library; and WHEREAS, Palo Alto has attracted staff personnel and a caliber of municipal employees to our city's service which is reflected in the many national and state awards Palo Alto has received; and WHEREAS, the citizens of Palo Alto have consistently enjoyed a high degree of municipal services coupled with a low tax rate not found elsewhere in California; and WHEREAS, the citizens of Palo Alto have wisely provided a mandate for a new civic center which will be symbolic of the quality of life found in Palo Alto, such civic center to be ready for the city's 75th anniversary. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that a certified copy of this resolution, attested by the City Clerk, be displayed at our Council Chamber, that a copy of this resolution be published in display space in our city's daily newspaper, that a copy be forwarded to the League of California Cities, and finally, that a copy of this resolution be sent to the Secretary of State, State Capitol, for incorporation in the State Archives.
